With the engine (2.8) out of my 85 coupe I'm looking to improve the looks of the engine compartment. What lies under the old insulation? By removing it will the noise and heat level increase dramatically?

Is replacement insulation available or can someone recommend an alternative?

BTW, we pulled the engine from the top. Worked great. We had pulled the cradle out last year for a trans replacement so the cradel/trans were pretty clean.

If you're not concerned with originality, IMHO, one of the best things you can do is yank all of that messy junk outta there.

I suspect might be a SLIGHT increase in noise, but it's hard to say - I didn't have the same exhaust on my car before and after I did this, so I have no direct comparisons.

It will really clean up the appearance of the engine compartment. Don't delay - grab a face mask, a pair of thick gloves, and a large trash bag - and go to town!

Do it. I did this on my duke and found no increase in noise. Did find rodent nests and filth. Suggest that you leave it on the wall between the pass. compartment and the engine like I did.

Paul,

I removed the insulation from the battery side and noticed no increase in noise. Looks alot nicer too. I would suggest keeping the insulation at the front wall though.

I took mine out also. No difference in sound. I did leave the insulation between the engine and passenger compartment on, I also added new insulation.

What type of material did you use? It looks very nice.

I'm using a Thermo-tec Cool It mat cut to fit and glued/bolted on. I got it from www.summitracing.com They carry several of the Cool It products. I even got the thermo shield tape to redo the wiring harness and clutch cables.
