Help! My 84 restoration project is getting slower and slower all of the time. I had to remove the driver's side axle due to busted cv joint. When I took it all apart, the hub literally fell apart. I finally got all new parts this weekend, but I forgot how the seal was installed in the spindle. My Haynes manual seems to have dissappeared. Can anybody out there tell me which way to install the seal? Thanks in advance.

I hate to say I beg to differ... ... but I beg to differ.
I've got a rear knuckle laying on the floor in my shop (two actually - lowering a car). On the backside where the CV shaft slides in, there is a press in seal (don't have a part number) just like on a front rotor assembly.
I can take pictures if you need it, to show where it sits etc.

watts please do cause the illustration part of the parts book doesn't show it and I don't ever remember seeing one. That is unless you're talking about an oring seal that goes around the hub.

Maybe I was mistaken with the name. But, just like watts said, the seal that I am having trouble with is in the inboard side of the knuckle. Perhaps it is called a knuckle seal? I just need to see a picture of one installed as I have both of mine removed? (I would hate to have to say that if I was married!)

Ok, I looked on that page before. Yes it does show a seal, although hard to see, and I do remember it. You are correct. I have just seldom replaced it unless it is torn or deteriorated.
So, yes you are correct...lol....old memory is failing again. Haven't done one in a while. Sorry if I steered you wrong. You stumped two mechanics with that one! Good luck!

He is replacing the whole thing. This seal rests behind the bearing assembly inside the knuckle. I did one last year. Tedious to install since the axle shaft comes through the middle. But if it isn't good it will allow water in on your bearing and rust it into the knuckle.

Yes, I am replacing the hub assembly, I just cant figure out how to install that seal. The seal goes into the inboard side of the knuckle (opposite from the hub.) Does it seal on the axle or on the hub, and how far down into the knuckle should it go?

It has been a year since I done this but I think it goes all the way to the back of the knuckle. The seal is against the back of the hub.
Mainly, I remember it was a bear to get seated straight but one I got it in right I used the hub itself to push it to the back. Tighten the 3 bolts evenly and they will pres it into place. Then do your center locking nut on the axle.

FieroSoul, what does the seal seal to? It looks to me like it seals on the axle, but I just cant see how it works. Anybody got one laying in the shop and can put up a picture?

Thanks watts........that is exactly what I needed. All of my questions have been answered with one picture. Now all I have to do is figure out how to save it to my hard drive (computer illiterate here.)

Ended up picking up two for that ugly blob you see in the above picture - which has since been sand blasted and painted (along with every other suspension part on the whole car).
I'll post a link to the pics when it's all put back together.
