I would like to some day swap my 2.8 out for ?, but right now in the real world, the 2.8 is getting a little tired. What is a guy looking at for cost for a mean 2.8? I would do all the work myself. And i have the 4-speed if that makes any difference in how one would want to mod the motor. What are the best ways to get the most out of it. Any info on cost, and the best places to get the parts would be great. Thanks.

Well you might not get what you are looking for. It is not cheap to get BIG HP out of the 2.8L I suggest you might want to look at maybe a 3.2L stroker kit or the 3.4L swap if you want naturaly aspirrated HP. I just did a really expensive build on my 2.8L and got less than expected power. I am by no means disapointed because I will have the NOS installed in the spring time.
You might want to look into finding forged pistons for the rebuild before you start. Here in Canada we were told you couldn't get them any more unless you went custom made. I don't know if that is really true or not but it is something worth looking into first.
If you really want to build the 2.8L then I will send you all the information on the best Hi-Performance parts you can get for these engines.
I posted this a while back. https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/031511.html

That is my basic build for the winter. I still have things I am going to add like oversized SS valves, new intake (when I find a better one,or make one), NOS, headers, new exhaust system ( maybe 2.5"),
MSD 6D ignition box, and probably anything else I can find to boost quarter mile times.
This will also render the car a TOY and just meant for weekends and track because the torque will be so low without NOS and the fuel milage will be even worse than it is now. Which is only 200 KM to a tank.
But hopefully I will have found another 87 5 spd for a daily driver.
Good luck on making a decision. Any way I can help just let me know.
