You have a single speed fan dual speed fans are only used in the fieros with AC, If i were you i would rig a switch to the fan and your battery and that way you can turn it on manually.

The relay on my 85 was shot and so was the temperature sender and i thought that my car just ran really cool and i took a trip on the high way and when i got home i realized that i had less collant then before and that i was blowing white smoke.

I ended up cracking my Cylinder Head, well i learnt from that mistake and also rigged a switch to the Sensor with light and dark green wires (Right buy the left of the cylinder head it plugs into the filler neck.) the one that turns on the fan when grounded and i leave it on practicaly all the time when i drive and it never heats up. I also have no AC but then again im lucky to get plus 20 degrees celcuis.

I have seen 84's only, without ac that had 2 speed fans. Both were in junkyards, neither had ac controls or the ac stuff in the front compartment. Perhaps the owners removed it all and even switched out the dash controls, but I always figured it was just something unique to 84's.

If you look on your 84, in the front, follow the wires from the fan. If you have a 1 speed fan, the wires will all go over to a relay on the driver's side, near the headlight. If you have a 2 speed fan, 2 of the wires from the fan will go to a large resistor mounted on the fan support. This resistor is what drops the voltage to achieve the low speed. They are fairly pricey & hard to find. The resistor on mine is about 4 inches long, 1" wide and is white ceramic. You can't miss it if it's there.
The relay is also different for the 2 speed fan when compared to the speed fan relay.
The 2 speed fan switch on the 84 does NOT screw into the thermostat neck. It screws into the cylinder head, right beside the #4 cylinder, and points directly at the back of the driver's seat. If it is a 2 speed fan switch, it will have 2 wires. If a 1 speed, it will only have one. I just bought a new fan switch from autozone-cost was $24. Wells part # SW591. It will allow the original connector to plug right into it.

Another good way to tell is that the one speed is mounted on a xtype mount while the two seed is soild excpt for the opening around the fan. The one speed mount looks like it would flow more air without the fan on than the two speed.

Thanks for the info. I have some of both. The switch on the engine is a single wire but is located on the front side(forward)of the head.I sure it is a single. One wire from the fan to the relay.
