Russell's Steel braided hose fittings (and others) have -4, -6, -8, for fitting size.

My question is what do the #'s represent in standard sizes? Like what size hose fits a -4 or -6 fitting? is that a 1/4 hose? do they make one that will fit on a plain metal fuel line with no flare?

Easy... all the -X sizes are in 16'ths.

So, a -1 is 1/16th"
a -4 is 4/16" (1/4")
a -8 is 8/16" (1/2")
etc etc

Watts is correct. It is AN hardware designation (Army-Navy spec., generally used in aircraft).

Become familiar with the AN system, because other measurements are affected as well. For example, the flare angle is 37deg.

You may need to look for fittings that are AN on one end & street or SAE on the other.

Ex aircraft mechanic here. Can you believe they actually make you remember this crap??

As noted above about the angle...
There are fittings (I think they're refered to as farm fittings) that look the same, but the angle is different (40* if memory serves). You can use them, but not on anything like brakes or anything under pressure. It's sort of like a 'in a pinch' or temp use only. Whatever - trivial knowledge that might come in handy... heh...

Pretty much everything ag is now JIC (37°) standard now. It used to be there was a lot of BSP which was 60° and a few had an odd 43° fitting that I don't know if there ever WAS a standard for other than for a particular manufacturer.

Things are quite a bit easier now that they've all pretty much settled on JIC. If you don't want to spend the big $$$ on the fancy steel braid for things like oil pressure and other lines like that, go to your farm equipment dealer and have him make you some up. They're all good to over 2,000 psi and suitable for petroleum products. Lot's cheaper than Russell or Earls too. DO NOT USE HYDRAULIC LINES FOR BRAKE LINES THOUGH.
