I just bought my first Fiero (1984)last month, and I have fixed everything but the wipers. When I turn them on they move very slowly, and when I turn them off, they stop wherever they are. Any ideas on how to fix this?

My '84 does the same thing. From what I've been able to find out, it is either the wiper motor or the control module. Haynes book doesn't have circuit diagram for wipers, and I haven't run into anyone who has a circuit diagram. I'd love to fix mine too, but I hate being a "parts changer" instead of a diagnostic technician!!!

Check the motor ground. Most wiper motors ground thru the mounting hardware. IF that's crappy then the wipers will usually be slow on all speeds. It can also affect parking.

I've never seen the schematic for the wipers with separate delay. I'm told the delay module can be bypassed but I don't know how.

Thanks,
I'll add, check the motor ground, to the list of things to check tomorrow when I can get it into the garage (way too cold to work outside).

The motor was harder than I thought it would be to replace. Still moving slowly. I might just need to take this to someone who knows a little more about electronics.

Any other advice?

I think the 84 has the external delay unit....

did you put in a new or a used motor...

I don't have any diagrams for the old style motor. One way to test would be to unplug it from the car harness and apply a known solid 12V feed to the motor. Problem is I can't tell you which wire does what on that one.

If the motor is slow with a direct feed, either the replacement motor is bad, it's still not grounding well, or the linkages are binding.

NOTE... You need to keep the glass wet while testing... running the wipers dry can damage the wipers and the glass. Running dry will also make them seem allot slower due to the glass friction.

Also... wiper motors draw a good amount of power... if the car has bad ground in the engine bay it can affect the wipers. In most years there should be a thin ground between the battery and body and a braided job between the block and body.

There are often more than those. I think most models also have a heavy wire ground between the tranny bell housing and the body.

A quick test... connect a known good jumper cable between the block or battery - and the car frame. (Make sure both jumper ends have bare metal to grab.) If the wipers speed changes, even a little, you've got a ground problem in back.
