I am doing the 3.4 DOHC swap and have the DOHC compressor. The thing is what I need to make the AC works??

Was thinking if the 3.4 compressor can work with the original Fiero gas or have to be 134a??

Thanx

The system will work on either R134A or R12. R12 is the better refrigerant but for cost reasons (10 times as much to buy it, really!) it is a lot better to do a R134A conversion. It would be a very good idea to replace the accumulator at this time to, and follow all the conversion directions.

The procadure is well documented here http://www.delanet.com/~pparish/gm-rp.htm
There is also some info in the cave about it.
The main thing is to replace as much oil as possible with a FULL charge of PAG oil and replace the accumulator, it is old and bad by now. You will need a set of guages and a vaccum pump, or do all of the repairs and then take it in and have it charged at a shop.

Here it is 4*F in New Jersey and we are discussing Air Conditioning!!!
Either A/C compressor will work but I recommend going with R-134A and Ester Oil in a converted system, changing all the O rings on the fittings, replacing the orifice tube and using a new accumulator as recommended in the prior thread.
PAG oil is not compatible with the older 525 mineral refrigerent oils that GM used but Ester Oil is. Therefore, I would use PAG oil only in systems that originally were charged with it but not in R-12 retrofits.
I've converted all my Fieros to R-134 and they work fine.
While R-12 works a bit better; the older R-12 refrigerent used in Fiero A/C systems is now obsolete and very very expensive.

The oil controversy is likely to be a bigger issue than the conversion questions! From what I understand most of the manufactures are recomending PAG oil due to its superior lubricating qualities while most of the aftermarket is recomending Ester oil due to it's ability to mix with the mineral oil that is left system. Either oil will work and there is a lot of misinformation out there (some of the retrofit information that I have read is almost scary!) Most people will just have to make a judgement call or more likely just use whatever oil comes in the retrofit kit that the purchase.
