My 86 gt died today and now it starts but won't rev much higher than 1500 rpm's. It pops out of the intake and back fires when you press the gas pedal. When it gets to 1500 rpm's it just chokes. I drove it about 5 kms from my house before it died. It idle's normal but won't rev. Please help me I need to drive my fiero!!

Check your spark plugs and wires for high voltage leaks. If you look in the engine compartment at night or in a dark location, you will see sparks dancing in the spark plug holes. If you don't see this other things to check are the coil, ignition module, and the ignition pick up coil. Also examine your distributor cap and rotor for wear and corrosion. Hope this helps.

After you check the items Avengador1 reccomended you need to check the timing. Possibly the timing chain may have jumped a couple of teeth. Hope not.

did you get any codes? it sounds like a dead cylinder to me. first i would check the plug wires for a short to ground. if it idles absolutely fine, the problem is bigger. i'm talking about jumping time, losing a cam lobe, or valve spring failure. these are all worst case scenerios, tho. let's hope it's just a bad wire...

Also check your coil output. Best to do this by connecting a spare plug to one of the plug wires and grounding the shell of the plug to the engine. Crank it and observe the spark. It should be blue/white.
Do this after you've checked the wires and dist cap/rotor.

easier way to check your coil.. just unplug the wire going to the coil pick up a screwdriver and watch teh sparks hit it while someone cranks it... make sure ur only touching that plastic handle

The coil is working fine, but the fuel filter was plugged up so I put a new one on. Now it revs but it runs bad I think it might be the egr, how do you check if the egr is working?

While the car is running and warm, remove the air cleaner assembly and push up on the diaphragm of the EGR. You should hear the engine start to stumble and then stall.
