Ok, my car, 87 2.5L starts fine. But I can here it miss some at idle, and it has a hesitation sometimes. Almost like a "sputter". I do get the code for the Oxygen sensor, which was "suposedly" replaced right before i bought it. I have cleared the ECM, and the code does come back. It also never goes into closed loop. So I know I need to replace that (which should help my MPG quite abit) but any other ideas on the missing/sputtering? Thanks

replace the catalytic convertor if its the original one. they usually get clogged and mess with the o2 sensor as well as causing a hesitation. Also clean the carbon from the Egr valve. Good luck!!

What Atarian said. Also, check the connections and wire that goes to the O2 sensor. This is in a HOT location which sometimes does bad things to the connectors and wire insulation. Someone may very well have changed the O2 sensor but throwing parts at it doesn't necessarily fix the problem.

Well, today I discovered that the previous owner had just put a "cap" or "blank" into the hole where the O2 sensor goes(and the sensor was unplugged and no where to be found). I removed the cap. put the new O2 sensor (with antiseize) in, pulled the ECM fuse.....waited 30 secs..then drove the car. Ride was perfect, no sputter, no stalls, even seemed to have more power....for the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would have just unplugged the sensor and put a blank in. Runs GREAT now though!!
