Was away for a few weeks and after driving a little, the battery wouldn't start the car. Now the voltmeter says about 13.9 to 14 volts at idle. The battery seems to be at about 12.25 (which won't even turn the car over, it just clicks). I'm thinking the battery died or something, but as the first 2 times the car started okay (if a little labored, but then I've had that problem since droping in the 3.4) I'm scratching my head.

So the Question is, what voltage should you see on the battery with the 3.4 (when off)? How many cranking amps should I get? The battery in the car is less than a year old, but it was originally with the 2.8.

The car always starts on the first spin, and I've got like a 110 amp alt in there, but at 1000 rpms (idle) 13.9 to 14 volts is okay, right?

Thanks

Doesnt sound like a battery problem to me, possibly a problem with the starter solinoid. Or wires. are all the contacts secure and clean? If so id pull the starter and have it teasted.

I have a 9o some odd amp alternator and a 600 cold cranking amp battery and the car starts very easily on all but the VERY coldest of days. I also see full charge at idle with everything going. So i think your fine in that regard as well.

A fully charged battery should show 12.6-13 volts.

If you are getting an accurate reading, it's low. Make sure you are reading directly on the battery. Not the cable hardware.

If you aren't sure, have the battery tested. lots of places do that free.
