Where do I begin.....I was at the Vets office.....the car had been idling high on the way over so I figure it was a vacuum leak so I opened the lid with it running and took a look, but it was dark and I couldn't see much. After about 5 min, I got pissed cause I couldn't find it and I shut the lid and cut the car off and went back inside.

I looked outside a few minutes later and could see a glow. I really didn't think much of it cause there are lights out there and I thought it was a refection. Then the glow got bigger........I ran outside and I pushed the button to open the lid, but it wouldn't work, so I got the keys out and I was so excited I broke the damned key off so I went to the passenger compartment and got my fire extengisher and tried to put it out from the bottom. They won't work sideways I found out. The vets husband came up with a hose and put most of it out until the fire dept got there. LIFE SUX

The odd thing is... It was the '84s that were a bit more prine to fires that the other years (untill they got the recall work done)

I'm sorry for your loss...

I'm very sorry to hear about this .

You might want to consider putting in a "spontaneous combustion" sensor on the next one. Or, perhaps spray the entire engine bay with that fire-retardant gel .

Out of all of this reteric, can someone tell me WHY these little cars are burning?? Is it the Front Exhaust Manifold? Is it because it didn't have the "recall Heat Shield"? Did it have the Hood Seal?,(next to the rear glass) Let's learn together as to make the Brothers loss mabe one of the last ones!... (Sorry to hear of your loss)

Phil,

Sorry to hear about that...

I too am curious as to why these cars do that, and would like to know what we can do to prevent it.

DUDE.....man I am realllly sorry to hear about your car !!! Do you have any idea what has been the cause of these fires?

Your really freaking me out with all this talk of fire.
Let me tell you what happened to me recently....I was running down one of the back roads heading home one evening about 2 weeks ago and I ran over a couple of those plastic bags (like Wal-mart has) Anyway when I looked in the rear view I didn't see it. Anyway I pulled into the first store I came to thinking it hung up on the front facia. When I got out I could smell plastic burning and looking under the car it had sucked up under the car and caught on the exhaust pipe where the cat is . (or should be)The pipe being hot it melted almost instantly and was burning let me tell ya its not easy putting out burning plastic that is melted on to the exhaust !!! The way the air is designed to flow under the car it looked like it was trying to suck it right up into the engine bay !!!
