Hello all

I just got my fiero back on the road and I guess I was spoiled by my other car, but the shifter is really sloppy, it grinds going into reverse and is difficult to get into 1st & second.

There seems to be a fair bit of play in the stick.

Is there an adjustment that I can make that will firm this up? Is it a loose cable end or something?

Thanks !

edit: I should clarify, it's not sloppy as in loose...as a matter of fact it's pretty tough to move left to right. I mean sloppy as in, hard to get in damn gear sometimes! It's easier while moving and everything, but if i could fix this one minor problem I'd be a happy driver.

The first thing I would do is check the clutch master cylinder fluid level and bleed the slave cylinder.

Another thing.....if you haven't already done it.....is to change the tranny fluid to synchromesh fluid instead of the 5w30 oil that came in it from the factory. I just did mine and it made a WORLD of diff in the shifting. Good luck!

Does the transmission shift easily with engine shut off. If so, the problem is probably not the transmission or linkage.

The symtoms you describe are common when the clutch does not fully disengage when the engine is running. In this case, you need make sure that the clutch pedal/master/slave/etc. are providing full travel of the clutch lever on the bell housing (this is common problem). If these parts are all working properly and you are getting proper travel out of the clutch lever (nearly an inch of travel is required to disengage the clutch), then the next step may be clutch replacement.

You can find a really good troubleshooting writeup on clutches on the Ed Parks website at: http://www.thefierofactory.com/clutch.htm

good luck.

I am having exactly the same prob:

Need to turn engine off to get into reverse (most of the time)

Sometimes need to double pump to get into first when standing still.

I have bought a master cylinder repair kit (not installed yet)

but after reading a number of posts on this forum understand that the clutch pedals on the earlier models (such as my 86) are made of aluminium and a prone to bending, supposedly the clutch pedal should sit about a centimeter above the brake, mine doesn't it is about flush, I feel I will need to replace with a steel one from a later model.

not to hijack the thread, but i have that same problem of the clutch not disengaging. but it only does it when cold, after it warms up it shifts fine, going into reverse is weird, sometimes it grinds, sometimes it goes right in. i can't figure it out at all......

EDIT - because i can't spell

Coinball,

That is strange, mine plays up more when everything is heated up.

Oh well there are plenty of troubleshooting guides, guess this aint going to be a quick log on - ask question -get answer - fix
kind of jobs. Damn I hate troubleshooting.
