Thinking about doing the V8 Archie swap. I have a 2.8 with a 4 speed. Would like to replace it with the 5 speed. The junk yard has a few fiero's. How could I tell if the tranny is a 4sp or 5sp? I know it's easy to just look at the shift knob, but what if it is missing? If the fiero is a 4 cyl, it would have the Isuzu tranny, correct? If it's a 6 cyl, would it be a Getrag if it's a 5 sp? How can i tell?

Not sure exactly

I know in 86 some of the GT's were 5spd with the getrag very few.

87-88 I believe they all had the 5spd getrags.. don't quote me on this though

There should be the console plate with the shift pattern as well inside.

Look at the way your shift cables look. The 5 speed cables are routed slightly differently I think.

AFAIK 4 cyl are Isuzu, 6's are Getrag/Muncie 5 speeds.

Even with no clutch and the tranny out of the car, you should be able to shift the gears. Shift it and see how many gears you have. All of this refers to muncie/getrag trannys.

Also...the shift cables for a 5spd the shift cable comes in from above the tranny and the select cable comes in from the rear of the tranny

The 4spd....both cables come in from the rear and are very close up next to the engine.

The cables prob won't be there, but hopefully the brackets will be. Hope this helps!

Phil

You can shift the gears with the tranny out of the car or in the car with no cable referrences. You should have 6 detents, for lack of a better word on 5 speeds. 5 + reverse. And make sure to shift into 4th to get reverse, as the gears can be positioned in such a way to prevent engagement into the 5th or reverse detents when you grab the other gears, since the tranny input shaft is not spinning. Either way, play with the gear selectors and you can tell. As for Isuzu or Getrag, the easiest way might be to look at the speedo sensor vs dipstick, everyone agree?
