It looks easy enough to do, but those tension bars scare me a bit. What's the best way to remove and install a decklid? This is on a notchback.

If you're just taking the deck lid off, you don't need to remove the hinge and springs. Takes about 5 min to take the 2 bolts out of each side of the deck lid and lift it off. But...if you do take the hinges off i.e taking out the lower 2 bolts of each hinge, then you need to put a piece of plywood over the back window and work very carefully.

Good luck

Yeah! watch out or it's goodbye back window! I have taken off several rear decklids by myself, their fairly light. Like Dave said, don't take the hinges off, just the decklid!

So it's that easy? Just unbolt the hinges from the decklid, and they won't fly back or anything?

I find its easier to have a buddy help when ready to remove from the hinges b/c of the angle you have to lift it it can be quite akward. Good Luck!

Super easy... 4 bolts and lift off. I've done it by myself, but it sure helps to have someone help you lift it off and reinstall it.

WARNING!! The decklid hinges won't fly back IF THE DECK LID CABLES ARE IN TACT! On my Formula, one of the cables are broken, so that hinge would try to fly through the back window when I remove the decklid. You can still do it, but you have to be extra careful and hold the hinge while removing the deck lid. You can then slowly let the hinge go. It won't touch the glass, if you let it go slowly.

FYI, if your car originally did not have a wing on it, the hinges have less tension than the ones with the wing. In other words the hinges from cars with wings are stronger, so if you are upgrading to a wing or have added a wing, get the hinges too.

I don't find taking the decklid off to be a problem by yourself...Try putting it on by yourself!!

I agree with cjgable; we recently put the decklid off my 87 SE (converted back to GT) on my fathers 84 SE, and the hinges definitely do not seem strong enough to hold the decklid up. (inc. spoiler)

Just don't remove that stupid spring on the hinges themselves (the middle bolt) thats a freaking pita to get back in.

Got 'em swapped! That was easier than I thought. It definately helps to have 2 people doing this. Now I just need to do some minor adjustment on the latch, and swap out the locks. Thanks everyone
