How can i make my shifter move more fluidly through out its range of movement? Can i lube it up, do i need a new one??

It goes in and out of gear fine it just feels like metal rubbing against metal. Its not as smooth as my other fiero is. This is for an 85 se 4cyl 5spd
Thanks
Jim

It may need the cables to be adjusted. and check also to make sure you have the right amount of oil in the transmission. I hope this will help.

Make sure that your clutch is completly disengaging. If your clutch pedal is bent or your clutch arm on the outside of the transmission is bent, cracked, or broken (as mine is-all conditions) you will have problems.

I lubed up the end and connectors in the console and on the tranny on mine. Also changed the tranny to Mobil 1. This cured my shifting problems. Some folks have changed to syncromech to help with smoother shifting.

Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil is NOT rated for the manual transmissions in Fiero. Or most cars for that matter. (You didn't say if it was motor or gear.)

Syncromesh is made for both the 5 speeds used in Fiero. (Read the stick article in my cave.)

You may need work on the cables and shifter as well. They do wear over time. DON'T put oil based lubricants on plastic parts! They may feel better for awhile but any problems you had are likely to return and be worse.

If you need to lube plastic, first clean it with oil free cleaners and then use silicone or dry teflon on it. Oil based things will react baddly with many plastics/nylons and it will bring dirt into whatever you lubed.

The car shifts fine the clutch disengages fine. Its just that the shifter asembly needs to be oiled badly. I can feel metal rubbing on metal and such. It feels like im pushing against this.

I'm assuming my best bet would be to lube up or replace the shifter assembly and replace the cables or adjust theM?
Or just lube everything and clean everything?
