Well, you already have a cold air intake.. stock. The only reason to go to a cone filter 'cai' is if you do an engine swap, really.. or if you just like the looks. Until you get into a 3.4 TDC, or 3800 or v8 of any kind, the stock airbox flows more than enough to keep up.

i did one but i can't get pip or search to work at the moment (problem on my end). i really did it to work out the idea for a future engine change but it's set up on it now.
do a search in the general chat section for "functional indy scoop".
I do believe it would be benificial as my 84 wont get above 4000rpms in 4th gear(thats about 90-95 mph) so i would think if you gave it more air it could pull all the way to 5000rpms. let me know how the cold air intake works. i also heard the water trap restricts a lot of air in the 4banger

The stock intake IS a cold air intake. It just doesn't have the shiney chrome and the cool looking cone filter.
Several people have reported that aftermarket cold air intakes do almost nothing to improve power for the 2.8 V6, so I'm sure the 2.5 4-cyl shouldn't be any different. Boring the throttle body and porting the intake manifold should give you alot more power increase than an aftermarket cold air intake.

Remove the screw holding the grill in place below the gas cap door. Fabricate a metal plate to fit where the grill did. Cut a hole in it and install a flange to allow you to mount a cone filter.
Presto! Not only do you now have a "cold air intake" but you also have a cone filter that everyone, and I do mean everyone, can see.

Tried it on my L4 that has a cam, larger throttle body and headers. I gained nothing and went back to stock air box. I stand corrected. I did gain alot of noise (air). I have 5 speed in mine it pulls until the computer rev limiter kicks in and I am well over 120MPH by then.

Lets try not to mix apples with oranges hear the v6 has a diffrent air cleaner assembly then the 4banger. for the sake of us idiotic 4banger owners lets keep all data to the 4bangers only. the real reason for this is true its a cold air intake but it also takes from the exhaust on the front(front of car) side of the enigen and air cleaner. i think(havent tryed yet) it would add some air flow if you added straight piping with a less restricive filter. and i am not just talking redesign the "ACA"(Air Cleaner Assembly) im talking for a cold air intake take the hole thing out of the car and install new from the vent straight to the filter to the throttlebody.

The only things you will gain is an empty wallet, and more noise. The stock airbox flows more than good enough for the pushrod 2.5.. it's fine until you get into 3.4 TDC territory.
The water trap doesn't restrict at all. That little hole you see at the bottom is actually for water to drain out, the air flows up and over that plate.
