Any one fimiliar with the 2.0L engine in the 89 Sunbird? I'm getting a check engine light to come when the cooling fan kicks on. It isn't running quite right. I thought it might be an oxygen sensor, It helped a little. I also put in some fuel injection cleaner in the gas. It was speuing balck smoke out now and then when she accelerated. My daughter drives it and she is away at college. She doesn't undestand automobiles and she doesn't know what maintenance means. Any Ideas?

It would all depend on what code set when the check engine lite came on.

I agree the engine code is what you need to solve the problem. the black smoke doesn't sound too great either.

Well, I'm guessing it will be a code 43 or 44. If so, then replace the O2 sensor. If it persists, then you'll need further checking...
