I'd be more concerned with the fact that it won't filter the air for crap...
But something is better than nothing, right? If it were me, I'd back it with window screen or something tougher, and stack up the layers of panty hose at least a half-dozen thick... At LEAST.
It won't flow for crap, but should keep some of the crud out of your engine.

JON??? Hello?
Are you suggesting that Jonathan wears panty hose? And if so, would they be his mother's or yours? haaa...
Jon is up at his cottage with Carrie for a couple of days. I spoke with him today. The poor boy drove 18 hours straight from Michigan to my place in Burlington. Then up to Pennetang back home to Kingston.
I got his number here. PM me if you need it.

holy crap!! don't listen to mach 10 what ever you do....i used to be a dyno operator using the dynojet motorcycle dyno....and one of our experements were to run carbs open with velocity stacks and then the same with nylons on them ....really bad....they did not flow worth a crap!!!!!! it made the bike run very rich and robbed about 30% or more power(i would have to check our notes if we still have them)...but what ever the % was ..it was really restrictive.
you maybe better off with a foam filter of some sort.
sorry mach 10...i don't mean to shut you down like that ....it is just i have first hand experience with....nylons.(on carbs silly)

Oh, I wasn't talking about flow... I'd be more worried about the fact that the spacing 'tween the nylon strands is large enough to let in some serious dust... Stacking up the layers is for filtration purposes only!
I use pantyhose over my air filter... on my 4-wheeler.
People that ride in sand usually have 2 pair over their filter to keep the sand out of the filter. Just pull the old ones off after a day in the sand and slip on new (old) ones.
I think they might get sucked in the engine though...

by itself, it'll get sucked in. backed with wire mesh, it may just work.
Best! Ben.

In the desert, we used panty hose as a pre-filter to keep the big, cakey stuff out of the main filter. This way we could just snap the pantyhose and have a fairly cleen prefilter again. We always used a main filter though. The pantyhose would let far too many particles through to be an effective air filter. I would not run this as my only source of filtering. Just too many internal engine components at stake.
Thanks for the info guys. Seems to me that I shouldnt' do it.
I have been running around without a filter for a bout 2 weeks now. I havent' been driving it but running it in the driveway and stuff. That intake tube just kind of gets in the way sometimes and i always have to take it off to adjust something so I just leave it off untill all work is done.
Thanks again.
I actually was going to leave them on the girl when I was going to attach them. Which is why I also have my decklid off so she wouldn't be too uncomfortable.

Friends of mine use an old t shirt as a temp filter and put a zip tie on it. I think that two shop rags on each other soaked in trans fluid or whatever will work good enough and you could put it directly on the tb and secure it with zip ties since you are not worried about the air restriction.

Another good tip is black eye liner for paint touch-ups/ or red lipstick. And if there is an oil leak there is some napkin that will soak up anything!! hee hee No offence girls!~!!!

thats what i said.. but he lives and works right on the beautiful sugar sand beaches of Florida... i'm sure he drives there often too. I think he's just a Nancy Boy wantin' a filter!
Listen to the man, I have nearly passed out many times.
I like the idea of foam or a tshirt/rag oiled with trans fluid. Whatever you do, you might still want some type of wire mesh behind it to avoid sucking the filter media into the engine.

Just remember to shave your legs first. I'd just go with a piece of metal screen;nothing that'll fit through that short of a desert storm will hurt much, temporarily.
