i lost my fuel pump sunday how hard it is to replace and is it worth it to put a hi flow pump in because i asked my dad if we should but he said the car controls how much fuel to put in it so it would be a waste of money it is a 2.8 v6 with a meaty cam but i am probley going to put in a 3.4 dohc

When the 3.4 needs a high flow pump I would go for the high flow pump, it's a waste of money to buy a normal one now and a high flow when swapping the engine...

the excess flow the pumnp generates just flows back to the gastank, even the normal pump produces much more gal/H then needed at full throttle to keep the fuel cool.

This job takes very little talent. I did mine myself in a parking lot in 2 hours with 1/3 tank of gas still. However, it involved two shower breaks to rinse off the gas eating away my skin. Goggles and a creeper would have been extremely helpful. Relieve fuel pressure at the shraeder valve on the fuel block. Don't let this fool you, you will still get gas all over. Then underneath the car, remove the rubber lines. There are either 4 or 5, I forget. Filler tube (large), fuel line, return line, evaporation line, and I was thinking one other. Anyhow, after those are removed (hardest part), support the tank, remove the mounting strap and lower it. Remove the twist-locking top and remove the whole assembly. Replace pump and use NEW strainer (about $3 at the parts store). Have fun with the rubber lines, those are a pain.
If you want a high flow pump, here's what I use. I used a 1989 anniversary firebird 3.8 Turbo fuel pump. Same dimensions as the fiero pump but much higher flowing. I forget the #'s, but much higher. I want to say in the neighborhood of 250 lph. Autozone sells these, but it wasn't in there computer. They had to break out the book and order it. Took two days to get it in and costed me about $70. I'm sure if you look around, you'll see the "performance high flow pumps" at a much higher cost than $70. Remember, wear safety goggles and gas eats skin. Hope I helped some.
