On my '87 Mera, there are two cables that run from the passenger cabin to the top of the 5-speed transmission (shifter & clutch?). They have a bulky silver heat/flame protective sheath around them. It's a good thing, because both of them sit right against the exhaust system. I can see that part of the sheath has been burned away over the years.

Are these cable supposed to come in contact with the exhaust system? Seems like a recipe for disaster.

Thanks for you help.

JD you answered your own question...HELL NO they should not touch the very hot exhaust!!!! tie them up out of the way with a piece of wire or something!!

Make sure your select cable (the skinny one which comes up from below on the linkage) is routed alongside the firewall BEHIND the heat shield with the a/c lines! It should NOT be routed next to the exhaust manifold. The only heat source with which that cable should ever come in contact is the rear coolant pipe.
