There is sludge and large chunks of gritty material seen through the oil filler cap. How bad is this? Is this nasty stuff working its way into the rest of the engine? Would it do any good to remove the valve covers and clean out the gunk?

How many miles on engine? It dosn't sound good, the cleaner the engine the better!! It wouldn't hurt it to have it profesionally cleaned out, but its likely that it is that way through-out your engine....good luck, do you change oil often?..jim('84 Indy and '86GT)

Hoooboy!, this brings back nasty memories. You will probably find a LOT of that stuff on top of the cyl head, and some more in the lifter areas. You can clean it off, but ONLY if you are ready to drop the oil pan. I know, I tried it. Even used a vaumn cleaner hose to suck it up as I went, but enought of it fell down that it clogged the oil pump screen. Bet you got some blow by don't ya.

My Advise...Don't disturb it.

If you have one or both heads off for other nonrelated work, then get the dismounted head cleaned up profesionally.

Until then, make sure the ventilation system, the PCV and related tubing is clear and clean. That will help prevent further buildup.

AND MAKE SURE TO KEEP A CLEAN AIR FILTER IN THERE TOO.

I've used those 10 minute flush products, where you add a quart of what seems to be kerosene, into the oil, "Idle" for 10 minutes, then drain oil and replace oil filter.

You will never see any difference in buildup viewed in the oil fill hole, but the oil pump screen and bottom of pan gets a bit less mucky.

I've done that at every 3k oil change on one car I owned until I felt a little better. I can't say for sure it did much good though, as I never removed the oil pan to confirm anything.

Some people say to never use those engine flush products, so I'm sure you will hear from them.

I know at a few auto dealerships, they offer an engine, internal cleaning service, where they pump gallons and gallons of hot chemicals through your motor. They reclaim the chemical, filter it through something, and reuse it. I never tried that though. Anyone here do have that done? Maybe that helps remove that black tar.

Yep

coolant and oil are mixin...that means that your head or head gasket is somewhat damaged

Usually its the gasket...

Its not that BAD but sometime soon i'd get it looked at.

You might try an engine flush product made by BG. The machanics at the dealership give it two thumbs up.

Yikes! Thanks for the input, gearheads. GT hass 132k and is driven apx 1k/yr. Oil change every year as well as other maintenance regardless of low mileage. The car doesn't burn any oil or smoke. How did it get this way? What do you suppose it costs to have it cleaned as described?

Oil changes should be every 3 months or 3k miles. Unless you are using synthetic oil, I would suggest a schedule of at least every 6 months.
