"Your daughter, Carol Ann, is stuck in the TV set..." "GET OUT!" "Too bad we can't stay baby..."
Going to work today, and within 2 seconds of starting the car, the wipers come on. Low Speed. They ran for 2-3 minutes and then quit. Then I had to stop for gas. Started car and the same thing happened! Stupid, attitude given, never finished, always something, too expensive, hard to work on, POJ (piece of joy)
I jacked with the stalk, and found no problems there. Pulling fuse will stop the wiping, but who know what else...
Can anyone prevent me from looking stupid as I drive in sunshine with the wipers going?

Dude ...Join the club! Mine has done itfor almost a year now. Its the wiper stalk thats getting flaky on you. Aside from replacing it which is a pain in the arse ...only other thing to do is let it go.

Do you have intermittent wipers? You could also have a circuit board going bad as well. The switch in the column that the stalk attach to is the likely cause, but I had a similar problem where they would come on on intermittent, and stay on for about five minutes. I changed out the circuit card under the motor cover and presto. Problem fixed. The card is real easy to change. I got mine from a junked car for two bucks.

I've had similar problems, sometimes my intermitants work and sometimes they don't. on occasion they won't shut off at all till the key is off! I have heard it can be the circuitboard as was mentioned already. Does the circuit board have anything to do with the washer fluid pump cause I had big problems with that before as well so eventually I put in a manual switch for that.

Whether you have Intermittent wipers or not, if your wipers are a random, spur of the moment issue, and they kick on whenever they want, the wiper/turn signal switch assembly in the column is toast. You can live iwth it, but it looks a lot better if you replace the switch. This is quite easy to do once the steering wheel is off. Mine did the same thing, installed a new switch, no more problems.... Recently replaced my Stalk as well, so I hafta pull everything loose again *sigh*. ALSO!! If there is any snow or ice buildup underneath the wiper armature at the bottom edge of the windshield, your armature can not reach a resting point and will cycle continuously until you remove the blockage (Only for those of us who drive in the winter).... Good luck. Get a new switch.
wiper box with circuit board and wiper motor in it is a common G M part that is used in many cars!!!! replace board or whole box their cheap at $20.00 or less at junk yards or spray WD-40 on it to dry them for a temp fix
Maybe I can spit on the windshield for ya Blake ! Just put on RAIN X and take the wipers off !!!! OR Get Jen to hold those puppies down when you turn the car on!!!hee hee (sorry Jenifer!!)

I have had the same problem before, and yes I too felt like an idiot driving on a sunny day with the wipers going. I finally got out and opened the hood. I then grabbed the bunch of wired going into the wiper motor and shook and yanked on them and all the others they ran alongside. That seemed to cure it. It hasn't done it again since, although I 'm not really sure which wire the problem was in.
Another question, my wipers do not return to bottom possition when turning them off. I have to click them off when they reach the bottom and it gets really annoying, what could that be???

I too have the Phantom Wiper on my 85GT, they come one once when I turn the ignition for the first time in the morning.
I have replaced the board with one that works fine in my 87GT, no cure. I replaced the switch assembly in the column, no effect. I then put in another switch assembly with the continuous delay (vs. ratcheting), and the problem was gone.
But when comparing the two switches (electrically, i.e. at the connector), they seem identical when the switch is in off. I really don't see where the problem comes from, maybe something is slightly out of tolerance, I don't know.
I'm about to design a new circuit board that is not this sensitive and that is speed sensitive too. If only I had more time...

On my 88GT my wipers would swipe every time I put my foot on the brake! I finally just pulled the wiper fuse and only put it in when it rains Will be checking the wiper board soon.
Haven't had it happen on a Fiero yet, but I had an 83 Skyhawk and an 87 Sunbird that would both make one swipe across the windshield every time I used the turn signal till the car got warm and then would stop. I just figured it's a GM thing.
I too had the wiper problem. I replaced the circuit board. I did not want to used junkyard part because of possibility of it being bad. I found original part number on web search as #22102002 this number was relaced with a new number (#2203916) and is available thru gmpartsdirect.com -- I The price is $39.02 plus $7.95 shipping, before I purchase I called local GM dealers and price was $78.00 --- alf
