Hey all. This one is making me pull my hair out.
My 84 t-top turbo fiero was upgraded to 85+ wiring while at a HIGHLY respected fiero shop. I am going to leave its name out cause I havent been able to speak with them about it and I am sure they wouldnt of let it leave the shop had they known it wasnt right.
I am just trying to get this sorted out.

For those that have upgraded, there is a maybe 4x3 white electrical connection block below the left front speaker on the 84 thats not present on the 87 I took the dash out of to compare. I dont know what this block is for but it has some wires coming out of it that have been butt connected to other wires instaed of having the matching connector plugged into it. It looks like maybe it has something to do with the wires going to the doors but I could be wrong.
So does this elec block remain after normal swaps or did someone try to take a short cut?
I am thinking of taking the interior harness out of the 87 and intstalling it into the 84.
I know this is kinda vague but I dont have a digital to take pics.

Any way...this is what its doing...enjoy the laugh!

No interior dash lights
Cooling fan runs anytime the ignition is on but will turn OFF if parking lights are turned ON!
Rear tail lights dont come on unless you turn the a/c ON in any position.
Tach inop
Oil pressure pegged all the way to the right
Coolant temp is 100 anytime the ign is ON but will go to 150 when turned OFF.
I think its the radio harness, but the entire pigtail has been cut off and all bare wires
No brake lights

Thanks,
Steven

Let me know who did the work, so I don't use them. I had heard that rewiring the 84 for later years Fiero equipment was difficult, but the problems you are having from a "highly respectedfiero shop" makes my blood run cold. I'm glad I have an 87 and 88.

Best of luck getting it fixed.

I'm not sure how much this helps....

It does sound like someone hacked the harness. To my mind, the harness should have been converted bumper to bumper. Anything else is a bodge that is bound to have problems.

If you are having problems, the MF that installed it is the one that has to fix it. If they don't or won't then sue them in Small Claims Court. (SC court is an amazing invention.)

That said....

87 is the "best" of all Fiero years. It fixes the vast majority of things without the increasingly limited availability of 88 suspension parts. (Never buy any car that is available only one year unless you have money to burn or love headaches.)

I would happily convert any 84 to the 87 harness but only if it can be done bumper to bumper. That includes the Gen 2 Headlight Motor system. The dificulty here could be the engine. I don't know if the 84-86 distributor based L4 can plug into the 87 car harness. (Even if you change an 84 engine harness to a 85-6)

It would be nice if the Fiero all had the same harness but there are actually several. There are enough things differant between them that older year stuff might not be plug and play.

The total sure solution would be to change the 84 to the 87 harness AND the Gen 2 HL motors AND change to an 87/88 DIS L4. This would fix a whole bunch of issues.

I dont know why but every time I try to post when I hit enter the window closes and I loose everything I just typed so, let me try this again.

Believe me, the shop isnt the issue! I just think they had someone do it that must have been ready to quit or something. I KNOW FOR SURE the owner would not have let it go if he knew. So please, lets get away from where it was done. Please, I havent been able to reach them yet to discuss and I know they will make it right(somehow) but taking it back there is out of the question since they are SOOOOOO far away.

The car is an 84.
86-88 Dark grey/light grey interior
It has the 85-86 distributor in it.(can I go DIS?)
87-88 headlight system (complete front wiring harness)
87-88 cooling fan
87-88 rear taillight harness
engine harness from an unknown yr but its atleast 85+ due to C500 location (by battery)
Interior harness is JACKED up, period. Its 85+ but its bad.
So I guess I should go from the front harness connection and replace everything BACK to where the harness goes thru the firewall...
This is gonna suck! I just replaced the dash to 87-88 one.
Well I guess I will get good at R/R interior parts! SIGH....
