It seems like 90+ percent of the Fieros I have seen have a sunroof. I have an 86 GT that does not have one. Is this rare? I intentionally went searching for one equipped this way. Not because I thought it was rare, but because I don't care for the leakage problem they seem to develop. Anyone have any production numbers?

rare? YES. I spent 2 years searching for a sunroof delete. Could not find one! AcursedX has a very, very sweet, red 88 GT without a sunroof. In my opinion, that's the way they should have come. WTF is a sunroof for anyways?
I guess on hot days you could always take it right out and wave to people...

um I seen them before I almost bought one it was an red 87 with a tan interior. didn'tt like the color scheme and the auto tranny so i did not buy it. I have an 86 gt and a 87 coupe both have factory sunroofs both do not leak. I have not performed any maintenance on either. it's kind of cool to be able to look at the stars at night when your parked. also makes it easy to air out the car. I would rather have t-tops those are rare.

I didn't want to come right out and say it, but that's exactly what I was thinking as I wrote my initial post.
When I found my automatic, I was originally going to fix it up a bit and then sell it to buy a 5 spd GT without a sunroof. Knowing how much trouble I had finding this one, I doubt I ever find one with a 5 spd for a reasonable price. So I've started considering options that would keep me in this one. A 4.9 caddy swap is starting to sound real good. I know, I know. It's not the most popular swap or the engine that makes the most torque or HP. But it's supposed to be fairly easy and it's bound to be a hell of a lot faster than a 2.8 V6. Afterall, I'd be gaining about 125 cubic inches and not adding much weight. Besides, how cool would it be to have an aluminum V8 in a Fiero...

ive got a 87GT factory sunroof delete, and a 88GT that the sunroof was removed at some point in its life, however i would have liked to have a sunroof in one of my GT's
my 88 is down for the count right now awaiting its 3800 swap.

They don't seem to rare to me. I've looked at several listed in the paper only to find that they don't have sunroofs. My 85SE has a sunroof and I like it. It seems less confining to me.

My 86 GT has a sunroof, and I love it, I like how it makes the interior a little taller, and how you can remove it since its almost as big as a targa panel. My car is black so you can barely notice it has a sunroof since the sunroof glass is factory tinted. Even though my car has A/C I still enjoy having the windows down and the sunroof out.
-Oh yeah, my car wasn't well taken care of before I bought it in January, and have yet to have any leaks from the sunroof.

The majority of GT's that I've seen seem to have a sunroof, or is it a moonroof? While the interior is brighter with it, my preference is for a plain solid roof. I own two 87GT's one with a sunroof and one without. If you wish to keep the sun out of the car with the sunroof you can put the OEM shield over the glass. However, my experience with these things has shown that other problems develop 1. they eventually leak and require new weatherstripping 2 the catch gets loose and rattles. 3. The headliners in cars with sunroofs don't seem to survive as long. 4. The interior upholstery fades from the sun. 5. If you forget the shield you can get sunburn. 6. If you get overly romantic with your girlfriend truckers and people in tall buildings can see too much!!! Rather than have an extra item to maintain I'd rather not have a sunroof. IMO the roof looks better without one.
If Fiero sunroofs aren't prone to leaking, how come you see so many for sale posts that say "sunroof does not leak". Must be a common problem if they feel like they need to go out of their way to tell you theirs doesn't. I also agree with the headliner comment. Seems like the ones in sunroof cars have more of a sag problem than those without the skylight.
Those sunroof production figures are lower than I would have guessed, but still a much higher ratio than any other car available with a sunroof, I would venture to say.
Wish there were GT figures for 86 and 87.

I've owned fastback GTs with and without the sunroof. Funny how what you have is what you like. Now I have a sunroof again, and I like it again.

In the past 2 years I have owned 3 fieros with sunroofs. None of them leaked! But then they all had low mileage. I would conclude that as the parts age, they are more prone to leaking and need attention.
My 85 GT doesn't have a sunroof for two reasons 1. At the time I was planning on moving back to the "sunny" coast of oregon. 2. I wanted to spend the money on stereo equipment.

My 87 has a sun roof, my 88 does not. I like the sun roof for ventilation. Just crack it open and you can drive with the windows up and nice flow theorgh ventilation. The 88 I have to crack the window down and to me there is a lot more wind noise with a window open than there is with the sun roof open.

I don't know that I would agree with the notion that you like what you have. I had an 85 SE V6 with a sunroof before my current Fiero. I did not like it, but I bought it because the price was right. I never used the sunroof, which is a shame. Since I had to put up with it leaking, I should have at least got some use out of it.
They serve no purpose though, if you ask me. (Unless you're 7 foot tall and just have to have a Fiero. Then I'd agree that you're probably going to want one with a sunroof. ) Just another thing to fix though, IMO.
Why do you need to see the sky when you're driving anyway? Aren't you supposed to be looking at the road? If it's road noise you like, or the feel of the wind blowing through the cabin, push that little button on your console that rolls down the window (or turn the crank on your door panel, for you less fortunate owners.)
Don't get me wrong. I'm not ripping on Fiero's here. I love them. I just think the sunroof is one of the stupidest options ever to make it onto a car. Right up there with dual-zone climate control for the front seat of passenger cars. Anyone figure out how to retro-fit that into our spacious Fiero interiors yet?

Personally, I prefer a hardtop. I had a fiero with a sunroof. I didnt like it. Too noisy and too hot. Never leaked. I have owned 5 fieros, and 2 had sunroofs. 1 85gt and 1 86 gt. I think it may have some to do with location. I know You dont see as many Ttop Fbodies in Fl as you Do in Indiana(just me?) I think it has to do with the sun and heat. both of my formulas have hard tops.
As I started to read the first few posts here, I began to think: "Hmmm... my GT has no sunroof - maybe that is something rare?" Then read further and realized it's no big deal.
Sunroofs in a Fiero, I can pretty much take or leave. As it happens, I own four Fieros; two with sunroof, and two without. Presence or absence of sunroof had no bearing on the decisions to purchase any of them. Had to stop and think just now, which ones had sunroofs.
As long as they don't leak (and luckily mine don't), and as long as you can block them with a decent-looking opaque panel, they do no harm even in the summertime!
My Cavalier came with a stupid aftermarket sunroof, and it's a different story. It was too small, it leaked a little, wind whistled through it, and worst of all they cut right through a stiffener in the roof to make the opening! Left sharp edges on the stiffener, too. A thoroughly lousy job. Plus with no way to block it off, it turned an ordinary black car with a black interior into a solar collector! Believe me, not desireable in Kansas in the summer.
I blocked it off when I re-headlined the car, and sealed the sunroof with some rubbery adhesive from a tube. Lovely . Actually, nobody seems to notice that there's a sunroof on the outside, but not on the inside of the car !
