How do I take the shaft to the gear apart. I have the directions from Rodney Dicman and I've tried so many things and nothing has worked. My mom and my one friend tried and had no luck. It says to take a 3/8" deep socked to the end and put it in a vice. I tried this but didn't help considering the end is round.

I will give an explanation a shot,

take the deep well socket and place it over the shaft, with the end of the socket resting on the gear. Place the entire socket and gear into a vise, one jaw of the vise should be on the socket end, and the other jaw should be resting on the end of the shaft that does not have the socket covering it. SLOWLY close the vise, and the socket will press the gear off of the flange that it is pressed on. Go slow, and give it some pressure.

Me and a friend tried this and after nothing happening but several sockets breaking and nearly breaking the vice, we decided to take it to Autozone. They tried the same thing there and now the shaft is broken. I have an 87 but for whatever reason it has an 84-86 assembly on the drivers side and an 87/88 on the passenger side.

I might be able to get a hold of another 87 motor but does this mean that I have to rewire?

I would love to meet whoever wired your motors up. The 86 and 87 systems are totally different, with one requiring a bunch of relays to work and the other using one module to control the motors.

You will more than likely be in for some pretty involved wiring to get the correct motor in.

I have done four motors using the socket and vise to press the gear off, and never had a problem. Sorry to hear that it did not work for you.
