i just went through this with my new project car (88 coupe) I bought the car off ebay not running, when i went to pick it up it would crank and sputter and do nothing more so i had it flat beded to my shop. i installed a $4 set of cheap ac delco plugs and it fired right up but ran very bad and blew blueish black smoke and smelled horrible. The oil was about 2 quarts over and stunk of gas. I figured the engine was toast, it has 131,000 miles on it. I wanted to drive the car over the summer and make it my winter project but since the engine was so messed up i just purchased the 3800 and tranny to start doing the swap right away. But the other day i had a few hours to kill after work so i started messin with the fiero to see if i could rescue the engine. Heres what i did: i changed the oil several times (4 times) to get rid of the gas in the oil. (gas in the oil will kill your engine very quickly) running the engine for 10 min between changes. and i took the o2 sensor off my 3800 and replaced the toasted one in my fiero with it and reset the computer (disconnect battery for a few min). I started the car but the check engine light was still on, i took the car out for a drive and after about 5 mins the engine light went out and the car has run perfectly ever since! Aperantly cause the o2 sensor was bad, the cars ecm goes into "limp home mode" and runs full rich and full advance i believe. and this caused the plugs to foul and eventually flood the engine and this is how i got it. I paid $600 for it with a perfect body and paint and near perfect interior with sunroof and now it even runs great, the ac even works.

so replace the o2 sensor is my guess. thats what was causing mine to make the black smoke and bogging.

Your problem is most likely the coolant temp sensor for the ecm. your car has 3 sensors....one for the coolant fan...one for the temp gauge and one for the ecm. The one for the ecm has 2 wires yellow and dark brown. From the way you describe it, the ecm thinks that the engine is colder than it actually is. Just a guess, but you don't provide alot of info. Also, I'd change the oil immediately before you spin a rod bearing. The oil is probably very thin because of fuel in the oil.

GTDude you did it again!

I had the same problem and my car was impossible to start without having to press the gaspedal about 1 cm.

Changed the coolant sensor and voila it runs perfectly!
