I notice that every connector I take apart is full of some nasty grease most of it reduced by age to the consistency of crumbly dirt. What is the best way to clean the old grease out before applying the new grease, and isn't the best grease a silicon dielectric grease?? Thanks for any help.

In the past I have used Q-Tips, rags, and a pocketknife. The silicone dielectric compound is available at any auto parts store.

I forget what the original grease is... It's a pain to clean out. spray contact cleaner, one that comes with a tube like WD40, helps.

The "best" way to clean varies by connector. Some are easy to clean others are a pain. Some are like the headlamp connector where you can easily release the terminals one at a time for cleaning or repair. Most are a pain to take apart even when you know how.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone tried that spray brake cleaner or is there something in it that prevents its being used. It just dissolves grease like mad elsewhere.

Anything that won't eat the plastics would probably work.
