A guy @ work asked to borrow my cyl hone, ring squeezer, ridge reamer, and ring groove cleaner. A bad experience taught me not to lend out my ridge reamer or cyl hone, but I let him use my ring compressor & groove cleaner. He borrowed the other items from someone else, then came back from lunch and announced that the old guy next door to him looked at the in-line 6 & said there was no need to hone the cyls, "because they had a nice glaze to them & you can still see the factory crosshatch pattern & all you will be doing is wearing down the cyl walls by honing". I tried to tell him he didn't want a glaze when installing new rings & the rings would never seat without at least a light honing, but he said the old guy was a mechanic of many years. Am I out in left field here, been doing it needlessly for all these years, or what? I'm going over tommorrow to show him how to use a ridge reamer so just wondering what your thoughts are before I look at this deal.
Don

Here is the deal maryjane. It has become common practice not to deglaze cylinders on a rering job. GM even lists it as a non issue. Machine shops are also using what is called a plateaued finish on rebore/rehoned cylinders. The plateaued finish is basically taking a freshly honed cylinder bore and knocking the really sharp honed edge off with a sort of a scothbrite type hone. This practice is common because of advancements in ring technologies. Plasma and Chromoly rings etc. However if you are using a cast ring it is still reccomended procedure to properly hone the cylinder.
