I was looking at my headless 2.8 last night and I realized that the #1 piston was pretty much bottomed out. Nothing odd there, but when I took the distributor out, the rotor was almost pointing to the #1 plug. Shouldn't the rotor hit #1 at the same time the piston is hitting TDC? The engine was running fine when I stopped it, so I know it's wasn't 180 degrees out.

Another bummer is that when I cleaned all the crud from around the distributor hole, my alignment mark was also scrubbed away, so I have to make my best estimate when I put it back in.

If you are going by the timing marks to find TDC, you could be 180* off. The timing mark hits zero for the number 1 cylinder at TDC and a rotation later (180*) for number 4 cylinder.
