I've worked at it with liquid wrench with a 36" breaker bar and can't even get it to budge! Do I need an impact wrench, or am I doing something wrong?

I once twisted the drive lug off a 1/2" breaker bar trying to loosen one of those bolts.

bigass breaker bar and a whole mess o muscle.

I used a 2 foot 1/2" drive breaker with a 6 point socket and stood on it and jumped up and down till it gave. A full can of penetrating oil didn't hurt either.

They're probably the biggest and toughest bolts to loosen on the car. Go nuts, take no prisoners.

And when you finally get them off, coat those bastards with antiseize before you put them back on. If you have to go through that once, you won't want to do it again like that.

You will need an impact capable of more than 500 ft/lbs of reverse torque. Even with this, it may take about 30 seconds of constant hammering before they break loose (mine did). Try a 3/4" impact if all else fails.

If you don't have access to an impact, use a propane torch to heat up the nuts and then try the breaker bar while they are still hot.

Someone should start a thread about tools that are good buys for us Fiero Gear Heads. I have a Duwalt Electric Impact gun that is my best friend when I start working on my car.

Heat can be your friend

Seriously, that and a whole lotta lever action and grunting. They are definatly a PITA, get a pipe and a really good breaker bar and an impact socket. You might break a regular one. (I actually usually slip a pipe over a wrench)
Good luck

I was able to get mine off using two big closed end wrenches. I put one on the bolt head and the other on the nut. The trick was to apply some penetrating oil first and to bang the nut side wrench with a hammer to shock the nut free. The wrench on the bolt head was to make sure the bolt didn't rotate as I hammered away.

My 1/2" breaker bar broke at 400+ ftlbs. When I came after it with a 3/4" breaker, it took every bit of 500 ftlbs. The suspension was compressed a couple of inches.

No cheater bar either
