Hello: I am going to be ordering a new 2.5 longblock tomorrow for my 86. I don't want to swap in a bigger engine, As this is just my daily driver and I have lots of parts lying around. Aparently GM discontinued the stock fiero 2.5 and it is not available. So can I get a 2.5 for an 86 Grand Am, Will this work ?. I would just use the bolt on's from my old engine ? Is anything about this longblock different than the fiero ?. Anyways would appreciate your input.

Thanks,

I am not a duke expert, but, the basics of all the 2.5's are the same, from the Chevette (and probably before) to the GA's.

GM, like most companies, has tweaked the engine from day one. The '88 Fiero I4's, for instance, has a distributorless ignition that the previous years did not. Parts such as oil pans, manifolds, and accessories should bolt on, but some of the innards may not swap without the proper accompanying innards.

Passing on to others...?

Not sure on the GA 2.5, but I believe it is the Pontiac 6000, and Olds calais 2.5's that are very similar.

I have a 63k kilometer 2.5 here, ran nice and strong before I pulled it. It's yours if you want to come down Lunenburg way and get it.

I found this link which states that there are several variations in the 2.5 iron duke. I know this first hand since I tried to use a 2.5 out of an AMC eagle in my s-10.
