I just bought a 86 SE. The frame, the body, and the interior are all in good condition, but it has no engine. I repeat no engine So, I request information from all you engine swap gurus. I'm looking for an engine than will give me comprable preformance, on par with the 2.8, and decent mileage. It was a 4 cycl automatic and I've got all the original driveline components so anything I can reuse would be good and It's a tight budget project. Thanks.

I'd suggest a 3.4 which is virtually the same swap as a 2.8 except the starter is on the other side and you will need to have bolt holes drilled to accomodate the starter. 170 HP 210 FT LBS of torque. I had one......feels nice. With a squirt of nitrous.....that sucka will run.....VERY FAST!

hehe, Thanks for sharing my enthusiasm GTDude. If any car is getting a 3.4 it will be my GT though. I'm hoping for a low cost solution for a car that's just in too good of condition to part

You get what you pay for. A used Fiero 4 cylinder, if you can find one may be had for a couple of hundred bucks. A new Fiero friendly four cylinder engine maybe 1200-1500 bucks.
Same with a 3.4L V6.cost plus installation may cost up to $4000 for a new engine when done by a qualified mechanic.
If you do it yourself with a used engine costs will be less.
If you don't have alot of mechanical skills, I'd say get another 2.5 and stick it in there. They are extremely easy to work on and it will still be a quick and fun-to-drive car.

Thanks for the help guys. Did GM ever produce a FI 2.5 that could be adapted for use in the Fiero? What was the latest application of a usable inline 4. What about the Quad 4, Is converting my car to a five speed pratical? I plan on buying a used engine, of some sort, and doing the installation myself. Sorry for all the questions, up until this point I've only worked with my 2.8 V6 and researched corresponding swaps. Thanks again.
The 2.5 in fiero's is fuel injected. TBI=Throttle Body Injection. I suppose you mean Multi Port injection, and no, I don't think the 2.5L was ever offered with that. The Quad-4, however, was. Just, swapping in a 5-speed for an auto is doable, I'm in the middle of doing that myself with my 3.4OHV. I've been on it for about a week now, working a few hours each day and am over half done with it. I'll post the results soon...
