I have an 85 GT with a snapped crankshaft. I have an 87 2.8 I can take the crank out of. Are these cranks the same? Thanks Flea

Flea, I was always under the impression that the crankshafts were updated in 87, with larger journals.

The P-22 dated November 1990 lists the same crankshaft for 85-87 model years. There is a note about which woodruff key to use to match the keyway.

Seeing that the crank is comming out of another engine, I assume it already has the keys in place, so you are good to go there.

Hope this helps!

Crankshaft main bearing diameter was 63.35mm from 1980 to 1984. In 1985 it changed to 67.25mm on the injected engines. Crankshafts from 985 to 1987 are the same. 1988 is internally balanced.

Found some interesting info on crank identificaton external or internal.
" All 1980-84 and some early-production 1985 engines feature crankshaft main bearing journals that are 63mm (2.494in) in diameter. To increase durability, all engines produced after this use 67mm (2.648in) diameter main bearing journals." The casting number is usually located on the crankshaft snout where the cam gear is located.

CASTING# TYPE OF BALANCE JOURNAL SIZE

504 External Small
209 External Large
817 External Large
481 Internal Large
526 Internal Large

This is only a partial listing of factory-installed crankshafts. I found this info in Tom Currao's book How to rebuild your 60 degree v-6. It's full of info on the 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4. Let me know if this helps or you nee more info.

FWIW... I have also heard that all MPFI engines (such as ours) got the larger journals.
