To those in the forum that have mentioned installing a Bonnivile HUD in their car... Can someone tell me how to bench test the display? I have two units, and would like to see that they at least light up before going through the installation. A tech told me "if you just hook up power and ground it should light up 0. Power is pin A1 and ground is pin A8".
The problem is that there's no wire to pin 1, and the schematic shows pin 12 as ground. Unfortunatly, the tech isn't replying to my emails to clarify his instructions.
There are 12 pins on the outside of the unit, and the info I found lists them as follows:
2 fuse output inst panel lamp 3 illuminated display signal 4 low level signal 5 turn signal lamp feed - lt front 6 check guages signal 7 metric conversion switch signal 8 vehicle speed signal 9 turn signal lamp feed - rt front 10 high beam headlamp feed 11 fuse output - ignition 3- 12 ground-clean
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Tim

I say pay the $20 for a schematic !! Well worth it if you can read one! Look at www.helm.com something like that!! Tell them what you need they will copy it right out of the manual. I did this on my 3.8sc swap and found it VERY helpful! It would be way better to know excatly what and where the wires go.
Start there THEN ask for help I will be glad to help figure this out for ya!!

Welp today I got a steering wheel controlled stereo and premium sound module, the hud unit and dimmer slider\height adjuster for 40 bucks from a 93 Grand Prix. Yesterday I got the steering wheel with stereo controls another premium sound module, power window switch with drivers window express down module, and drivers information unit from an 89 Grand Prix for 40 bucks. I was debating on getting the 5 way power seats with driver and passanger lumbar, that would set me back 25 each including switches. and the remote door lock / trunk device

Holy Clearance Sale Batman! That's a deal and a half! I'd take the seats for $25 each just as an experiment to see if they'd fit. You can always get your money back out of them. Way to go!

I'm not asking where the wires go. I know where they go. I have schematics and diagrams up the wazoo. My message asks about bench testing. I want to see them light up before going through the trouble of installation.
Aren't you the guy in the animation falling off his car? :-)

That does not include the "pocket items" on in my case toolbox items. I snagged the HVAC controls from the grand prix and the fully optioned light switches and fully optioned wiper switches, digital dispalay (speedo, tach, fuel gage) from the inst cluster. I think I will get the seats and try to transplant the bladers into a fiero

Well, it's turned out to be not that simple. If you look at the chart, it seems there is more than one power input. The schematic shows the HUD switch and headlight switch as part of the display circuitry. I have tried power to ground, and nothing happens. The odds that both units are bad are quite slim, so there must be more to it. I don't want to accidently blow it out by applying power incorrectly, so I was hoping to find someone who has messed with these.
I am no expert. If you could find one in a car that works. Take a multimeter and test the power to each wire. Also you should apply it to see if something completes the circuit. Just a thought. BTW do you have pics of this unit I am very curious.

Well I dono if this will help you but I took the entire wire harness apart to see where things went. If you have the connector there are 2 brown wires and 1 blue wire that ran over to the instrument cluster plug all the others went to "tie in" with other wires. NONE of them were obvious power wires.
Did you get the dimmer slider with your hud?
I got pics of my haul (including the hud) over the last few days and will post them in a bit.
On the side of the dimmer is a slider (mine is broken off) that moves the internal mirror to adjust the height of the image above the dash

I am starting to think that this goes through the ECM and the ign. It has to talk to the VSS ? right? This is to hard to figure out for me without the schematics, sorry I am drawing a blank.

Yes that was me falling off my car!! neat huh!
Ok. I've got the schematics for the 96 Bonneville SSI HUD online. 1. Go to http://www.MoreThanMeetsTheEye.com 2. Click on the "Gateway" button at the bottom of the page. 3. Enter the password HUD.
Whoever made than animation is brilliant!

What year bonnivilles did this come in? And do you have to do a 3.8 swap or can it work with the stock electronics?? VERY interested in doing this swap after reading this thread!!

It's from a 96. It seems the only thing you need is a 4000 ppm (pulse per mile)signal for the speedometer. Everything else comes off the idiot lights.
On the HUD without the dimmer. #3 12v+ #12 is - #5 12v+ is a dim down for night -----------------------------------
Hopefully you have the plugs for both slider and HUD
Our units are a bit different but work the same way. Basicly you can't hurt it by plugging wires into a 12v battery. Almost all the leads are +12 except 3 grounds, low fuel and check gauges that work only when grounded.
I don't remember what pins are used (I'll check) but power is supplied through the dimmer first then to the unit. There is 1 ground from the unit and 1 ground from the dimmer. At least theese three wires (on mine) must be hooked up for the unit to work.
BTW my connectors use letters not numbers and pin A is not used

Yes I have the connectors/plugs. Mine are also lettered, and the first pin is not used. I got the pin "A1" designation from a GM tech. That's why I started this topic in the first place... because he wouldn't answer my email to clarify where pin A1 was! Did you have the switch connected to the display to get it to light... or can you get the display to light by itself? FINALLY we're back to my original question! ;-) Tim
