Sounds like you need a new pump, you should only hear it "wind up" when you first hit the ignition key (lasts about 3 seconds). It's either the pump or you have some really good ears!!

Ditto, I don't hear the fuel pump in either of my Fieros.

The pump in my car has been loud ever since I got it(5 years ago)I'm told its one of the louder ones some people have heard but I'm also told they are known to be loud. It doesn't bother me much but I don't think its unusual.

and keep your gas tank over 1/4 full. the fuel in tank cools the pump. Running on empty will burn it out fast, youll hear it on every stop, every turn.

It could be an after market one making all that noise, but I think it's trying to tell you something. When your engine starts to have trouble running properly, you know what to look at first anyway.
Been there, done that.

i routinly ran my 84 down to E, and it had 143K miles on the origional factory pump before it failed.. took it all apart to replace with new bosch unit, and found the screen that filtered at the pump was bad.. replaced the pump anyway becasue i had the tank out. So lets see that's 143K miles @ 230 miles per tank.. so 595.83 fillups versus 192 miles per tank.. so 750 fillups and only a 190 mile range. If 143K miles is short pump life, and after the luxury of saving 150 fillups all i have to do is 1 hour of work and replace a $40 fuel pump i'll be ready at 286K miles with $40.

Reviving this topic. My pump makes a steady noise ever since I got it replaced a few days ago. Not very loud, but sounds like a combo between a vacuum and a air compressor. Odd. Considering I just paid $500 for a replacement (why oh WHY did I not do it myself??). The damned mechanics damaged my fuel sending unit to. Anyway, anyone else here replace theirs and now hear a whirring from the new one? I don't want to have to drop my tank and fix it... What a waste of $500.

I'm wondering if the water separator has been removed from your car's air intake and what you are hearing is the air coming in with the baffle gone, making more noise than normal.
Some Fieros I know that have the separator remove make much more "noise" than with it in place.
I ran out of gas once, had to put in 1.5 gals of 2 stroke fuel to get to the nearest station. My pump was noisy before, but now it is as quiet as can be!

My fuel pump got loud, then burned out, got a new one in it got loud and now it doesn't work when it is hot.... just be ready in case it blows. As for the sucking sound from the air cleaner, I kinda like it.
