After recently replacing the O2 sensor and passing a CA pre-smog test, the '85 V6 AT AC Fiero has developed a stalling problem. This only happens after the car is thoroughly warmed up.

Stalling occurs during braking to a stop. The engine will restart easily but each time the car is put into drive it stalls again. After several tries the car will proceed without stalling but will hesitate slightly when accelerating. The stalling problem will, however, intensify to the point the car is undriveable - starting but dieing each time its put into drive.

After waiting a short time, five to ten minutes, the car can by put into drive and driven. Car seems to run fine cold. Temp during the problem was 220-240F according to the dash gauge. The rad fan never came on during the incident.

Before the O2 fix the car ran strongly albeit with low (15-18 MPG)gas mileage.

Has anyone had a similiar experience or is familiar with the symptoms?

I knew a guy who had a differnt car that would idle ok, but stalled when you put it in drive - turns out it was the distributor cap - the contacts had arced so bad that when the timing advanced to compensate for the engine load, it lost its spark.

Sound like you could have an ignition problem - the control module going bad - esp if its temp sensitive.

Im not an expert on this - it really could be lots of things - sorry I cant give you an exact answer - but the dist cap would be easy to pop off and look at the contacts.

I noticed that you have an automatic transmission. Try unplugging the torque converter plug. If your torque converter is staying locked up it will stall the car.

That's what it was on my 87GT... I replaced and it fixed the ploblem. Like Avengador1 said, It's located at the front(toward's front of car) and near the driver's side by the stainless stell cover edge... Try unplugging it and see if the stalling stop's. If that does'nt help when you unplug it, then that mean's that it's ok and it's something else..?? Good luck.. *Smooth*

I'll second the thought about the timing too. My friend bought a "new" Fiero a couple days ago. Today we worked on getting it to run right. Turned out to be timing in that case too - too far out to run right - it would run rough or stall at an idle, but kick in with good power at higher speed. ('86 SE V6 Auto)
