Is the Block From an 85 4 cyl motor the same as an 88 Block? Can ALL '88 parts be put on a 85' Block?

I don't think you can use many of the parts from the 88 on an 85. the 88 uses the DIS ignition system and also uses an internal force balancer/oil pump set-up. The force balancer is crank driven. The DIS has no distributor, and no place for one either.
the oil filter on an 88 is IN the oil pan.

I think the 84 to 86's are the same but the 87 and 88 are different. the 87 has the DIs ignition but no force balancer. If you have an 88 engine you could put that in your older car but you would have to upgrade wiring, maybe the ecm too.
The problem with using the 88 is the force balancer set-up. It is the weak link in the engine. Theogre might have more info for you.

They are different! The 88 does not have the boss in the block for the dist. From my understanding you could use the 85 crank in the 88 block but not the other way around. I am sure the cams are somewhat different. I believe that rods and pistons are the same. Heads, intake, t/b are all differnt and won't interchage.

Does that answer your question?

Nope.... 87 and 88 DIS motors are totally differant. Very few if any parts can move across the DIS/Distributor boundary. Definitely nothing you need.

Also, the heads are different and will not interchange either.

Well the bottom end of my 88 is going to crap. I have an 85 also that has Cyl head issues so it was a long sot any way.

Thanks for the insight!!!
