I have an 85GT, and when I wash my car with a hose some water (very little) drips in through the moonroof gasket. Water stains the liner, very irritating. I took the roof off, and looked at the gasket. Some parts of that metal holder thing are rusted, and this lets water under the gasket where it stays and keeps doing damage. This is mostly around the rear corners. Now, I would like to fix this ASAP, and I guess I'd need a new gasket and to clean out the rust. Does anyone know how I can restore the rusty parts permanently? I was thinking of pulling the gasket, wire brushing all the rust& paint off, and reshaping the corrosion all nice with a sort of filler compound and sanding it smooth. I'd appreciate any brand names you know to work, any practical advice
or feedback of your experiences. Is this a common problem? How do most people solve it? Should I ignore it and live in denial? Thanks!

The only place i know to get the gasket is the fiero store - just fixed the same problem. I removed my corrosion then put a thin coat of vaseline on the gasket and it slipped right into place. Inside is nice and dry now - now i can put my headliner back in....

P/n for the sunroof gasket(technically "weatherstrip") is 20528472. I've also added 1/4 inch drain holes at each of the corners around the sunroof

I know everyone likes the Fiero Store, but man most of every part I need is still available at the local GM dealer and for less, including weatherstrips and even trim, let alone mechanical stuff, jmo

Also when you drilled those holes, what or where does the water drain to? The inner roof spaceframe? Just wondering as it sounds like a good idea.

Cheers, Roland.

I believe there are channels under the plastic roof to catch water and take it down the A posts and out to the ground. This is just based on what other people have said but I did mine and I don't get water in the car.

I did this to mine about a year ago and was finally able to recover the headliner. I still need to buy a new rubber and get the updated mounting hardware but this stopped almost all the water from getting in my car - I no longer get water dripping on my back when driving.

I spoke to Ed Parks at the Fiero Factory about getting a set of the metal moulding strips that hold the weatherstrip/gasket in place about a month ago .If yours are to far gone he can get you replacements .Also you can drill a 1/4" hole in all for corners , just thru the top NOT ,repeat NOT all the way thru ,there is a channel that runs completely around the sunroof. The 1/4"
holes go in the corner closest to the opening ,if you take the headliner off you can see what I'm talking about.Hope this helps .

Mini-Me,
This is some info I got on a leaking roof. I drilled holes and never replaced the seal.
\/

The first thing you need to do on pre '86 cars is to drill a
hole in each corner of the plastic outer skin supporting
your sunroof. GM started doing this mid year 1986 I own two
'86 Fieros - one had the holes, one did not... One leaked into
the passenger compartment - one did not

Now both have holes. I think I used a 3/8" drill bit. Stop when
you feel the bit has gone through the plastic and begins touching
the metal part of the roof.

I purchased a replacement rubber gasket from my local Pontiac dealer
about 4 years ago... Don't know if dealers still carry them. There
is also a thin piece of metal supporting the rubber gasket. I drilled
out the rivets holding this down and silicon'd the replacement gasket
directly where the gasket "track" used to be.

If this is not clear, take sunroof off and peal back a section of
the rubber gasket, you should see the metal track and determine if
you already have holes drilled in the corners of the roof.

You may also look to replace the hinge and bolt gaskets - they have
been known to leak when old and deteriorated as well.

I hope this helps.

My '85 leaks much less after I replaced the plastic bushings around the hinge and latch screws. I haven't replaced the main gasket, only the bushings. I think new bushings help hold the glass tighter against its seal.
