I'm in the process of installing a rear coilover kit on my 86. I bought two Monroe struts and am installing the kit. I was wondering if I have to remove the two metal plates that are on the top of the existing strut? I didn't get instructions with my kit, and I imagine I would have to. That wouldn't be such a big deal if the single nut of the strut wasn't stripped. Looks like someone went to change them, stripped the nut off, tried to grind it, and put the assembly back together without getting the nut off. I was wondering how I can go about getting these plates off. Am I okay to cut the rod of the strut underneath the plates, where the rubber is? Or is this bad? I don't want to be eating Nitrogen if I screw up. Any help is greatly appreciated, as this is pretty much the last thing I need to do before the car is done. Thanks in advance..
