That's what I ask my 86 GT, 4spd, 3.1 V6 (8000 on rebuild) every morning.

After I start her up, the engine wants to stall before finding an idle. I usually only give it 15sec to warm up because I am in a rush. After I give it gas and start to release the clutch, the GT starts to move forward like normal, then wants to stall thus jerking the car back until I engage the clutch again. I have to give it extra gas so it doesn't jerk quite so bad.

I'm tired of having to play with the clutch every morning, and it makes me look like I don't know how to drive a stick!

I just had a new EGR tube and EGR valve installed. Could someone please point the problem to me so I don't have to start replacing things that it may not need.

All help is greatly appreciated!
Greg

Try setting the base idle properly.
-Ground out terminals in ADL connector
-Put key in RUN
-Let sit for a minute to allow the IAC to screw in.
-Unplug IAC, turn off key
-Unground ADL(???I forget, but pretty sure)
-Start car and adjust the Idle screw to get it to run at like 500-600rpm.
-Turn off car and plug IAC back in and you should be good to go.

Reminds me of something my Cavalier Z-24 3.1 used to do. It would "hunt" for an idle speed. It hesitated/balked when you started to engage the clutch, and about the time you thought it was going to stall, it would take off like a bandit, squawking the tires. Very irritating...

Measured the output (center terminal) of the TPS with a voltmeter as I slowly opened the throttle (key on; engine off). The output voltage should increase smoothly as the throttle is opened. In my case, it did so, except that the voltage would drop to zero at certain midrange throttle positions. In other words, my TPS had "dead spots" in it. Hmmmm-!

A trip to the auto parts store, a new TPS, and the hesitation was cured. The "idle hunt" disappeared as well .

No idea whether you have the same problem - it's just a thought. Test the TPS before you replace it.

I have the same problem with my 86SE V6 4sp. It only seems to do it the first couple of times you disengage the clutch after starting, and yes it can be a little embarrassing. I try to let the car warm up a little more. I have no idea what the problem is since it is likely in open loop mode I doubt that anything but the temp sensor and the TPS have anything to do with the amount of fuel (lean or rich).

Sorry, don't have any soluitions, but you are not alone.

It may also have a bunch of carbon on back of valves and in combustion chamber. I'd suggest getting a can or two of GM Top Engine Cleaner from dealer or A/C Delco warehouse and following the simple directions. Where they say to shut off for 15 minutes I recommend longer if you've got the time.

What may be happening is the carbon soaks up a bunch of fuel when engine is cold, causing a leanout until it's got combustion chamber warmed up enough. I recommend Top Engine Cleaning as part of regular maintenance about once a year maybe 20k miles if your freeway driving.

Oh yeah, and if your take out the IAC valve and there is a bunch of crud in there... get it all cleaned out, that confuses the ECM also.
