The paint on my fiero looks as if the "clear coat" is coming off.....almost looks like the sun has bleached it in some spots... any ideas, other than a new paint job, as to how I can make these places less noticible? I think there is some kind of stuff I can get, but I forget what the guy told me... Any ideas???

Thanks

Barb

sorry, but paint job is all that can fix it. base colors without clear are flat (no gloss) nothing else will fix it for anything over a day or two. Also, dont let anyone tell you it can just be recleared. It wont work, clear has to be applied over fresh basecoat to stick.

A temporary fix, like for car shows, is using the colored wax/polish stuff. It only holds up for a day or two at the most. A repaint is the only real fix.

Along the same lines... I've got the "cloudy" clearcoat problem on part of my roof. It's a small area, and the rest of the paint on the car is in good shape. Do I have to sand this down past the base coat, or can I just rough it up and paint over top? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question. There doesn't appear to be any breaks in the finish.

I'm willing to try the touch up myself, if I don't have to sand it down that far.

the cloudyness is the clear delaminating from the basecoat. You have to sand the cloudy (white) untill it feathers out with no sharp break lines. To be sure, it needs a couple of coats of primer-surfacer or when you repaint, the edge may show thru after a few weeks.
