Just how much rust is to much rust? I spent last weekend pulling that fuzzy insulating foam out of my engine compartment...took part of the fender well with it! And that was just the air-box side. The battery side is next. I know the trunk sides are a wreck. Just when is 'critical rust' reached?

Excuse my fine photoshop skills, I outlined in some pics a badly rusted fiero.

The area between the red lines are the Frame rails, if you have rust here, thats real bad, and not safe once these parts start rusting away. The yellow circled area are sheet metal thats gone, still bad, but not a safety issue.

The 2nd picture is from the inside, the red outline shows where big parts of the frame rails are rusted away, yellow is sheet metal work thats gone.

The 3rd one shows how much of the frame rail is gone from the outside.

It is not finacially practicle to repair any rust when it gets to this point, usually the amount of work needed becomes big $$. It's cheaper to find a rust free fiero and start from there.

You can repair this amount of rust and still make it safe, but It requires a LOT of work, Again, not worth the effort.

Wow! Was that car on the road before that picture was taken?? I don't think I've seen one quite that bad before. My '84 was bad, but the frame rails were still repairable. It's not good when you can poke your finger through a frame rail..

Wow, and I thought cleaning up a few little patches here and there was bad..... I just cleaned the spots up and Covered it with undercoating again to try to keep it from rusting.... That Fiero looks alittle beyond that..

Ya, thats the way it was when my buddy bought it. He bought it for a parts car, it had a fresh rebuilt motor and the interior was imaculate in it, and good body panels.
I've actually seen them worse than the one in the pictures.

That car looks like it sat in water for a while. I've never seen one rusted that bad.

Thats what salt on winter roads does to cars around here, nice huh?

coupled with the fact that we bascially are surrounded by the ocean doesn't help the cause either.

I'd guarantee that 90% of the Fieros in this province have some amount of rust forming on them. I have gone through quite a number looking for rust free examples for myself. My 88 T-Top I towed some 3500 miles from florida, because I was tired of looking for Rust free Fiero's around here.

Some people think I am crazy for charging up to 500 dollars for clean engine cradles. Simple fact is that they are next to non-existant around here. You can get a scabby looking one in a junk yard for 200, I feel a rust free one is worth much more around here, as I usually end up dragging them back from the states.

Looks just like my 84 parts car, The thing was so rotted. How did it get like that? I have (and had) 2 84's, My indy and my parts car, Both had/have 83,000 miles, My indy is perfectly rust free, and driven on the same island. Yet... The parts car was rusting so bad the Strut towers were starting to crack. I never realized just how good my Indy is. What gives?
