On the passenger side there is a little blue box. I hate this thing. If it is in and I turn the lights on it rings constently. So I ripped it out now I have no chime. What is this blue boxes deal. My mom used to have a Fiero, 84 SE, and she said hers did the same thing what do I do. I like the chime for leaving the lights on or the keys in the ignition. Is this a common problem.

My 2nd Fiero didn't come with it. For 1st time in 14 years I left my lights on and of course required a jump start. Next weekend I found one and instsalled it back. I also have noticed that some are louder than others. Anyway, some can live with it and some without it...
Sounds like the wire from ignition switch is not signalling the blue box. It signals the box that the ignition is on and therefore should shut off that chime for the headlights. It's the pink with the black stripe wire.

First, the proper terminology is "blue dingy thingy". Gotta get that one straight. Go to Ogres cave. He has at least one write up about that. It's a POS right from the factory. I removed mine and now want to fix it and reinstall it but I can't find the damn thing.
There are two versions of the chime box. The first version seems pretty solid and I'm not aware of any design issue with it. That doesn't mean it can't go bad. The first version box opens on one of the largest sides.
The second version of the box is defective from the factory. The info to fix the defect is in my cave. The second version box opens from the small end opposite the terminals. If you can't solder or aren't fairly good at it, then find someone who can do it for you.... the circuit board is fairly easy to damage if you aren't careful. (It's a bit hard to heat the heavy metal bridge and not burn the trace off the board.) Don't forget to remove the plastic thing from the bridge or you will melt it.
I believe the two boxes are directly interchangable.

The last part number I had for it is in my cave. 10037040 try a dealer, GMpartsdirect.com. GMpartsdirect.com still lists them. ($35 plus shipping) some dealer inventories may also have them.
you may also want to try AC delco # 999373 distcribed as "WARNING PKG,HDLP" in the AC delco catalog. There is no picture so I'm not sure that's really it.... You'll probably have to special order it, which adds problems of it's own.
You can also try digging thru other GM cars in the salvage yards. Allot of them should still have the GM number printed right on them.... I'm told this thing was used in allot of other low end cars.
save the dead ones, even if you replace it. I'm working on something and will need a few dead ones. (No, I'm not sure how soon.... I'll make an announcement if/when I have useful info.)

if that is correct.... I don't need dead ones. not worth fixing them for that.
The dealers also seem to use this number in addition to the GM number. (If you do a parts search at ACdelco.com you get thousands of vehicles using the thing from 96 back to 82.)
I've now declaired the cave article on this topic officially dead. It got it's last update today.

Checked with my Pontiac dealer and the AC DELCO 999373 is a universal headlight warning that is a very small buzzer case with two wires running from it. I would say that is not what you want. I think the GM part# 10037040 is the right one although I have not seen one.
You can get the 10037040 chime unit from GM parts direct and some dealers. It's $30-40 bucks at GMPD. Maybe I'll look into fixing them after all. Even GMPD says limmited stock on them.
That means I'm back to looking for some dead ones to develope the repair and test setup. I figure I can do them pretty cheap, but I have to decide how people will pay for it. (Which is allot harder than figuring the repairs. No, I'm not doing sPay Pal or anything like it.)

I've got a "dead" blue dingy-thingy if you want it.. Squeeze it and it works. I couldn't find any cracked solder to reflow, so I just stuck in another one from a junkyard car. I hung onto it thinking that you might want it. E-mail me at riceburner98@attbi.com and I can send it to ya... - Bob W

Just received my "Blue dingy thingy" from GMpartsdirect.com p/n 10037040 as theogre stated and it's the real thing! The only draw back is it is a discontinued part and non-returnable for any reason. $35.32 plus $9.95 shipping and handling. I'm sure it's limited availiblity part so if anyone wants one don't hesitate.
