Lowering the car of the jack after replacing a clap and the damn car fell off the jack and the jack tore the boot on the passenger side axel near the tranny. How much is this piece cost? I think the axle may be bent. Damnit, I need this car to get to school and need this done by monday. Is this hard to do? I was supposed to go cruise tonight but *&(*#&$(#. Just my luck. Have to replace a small 5 min. fix(exhaust clamp) and just when i'm done I*** something else up. Can I just swap the boot from my other car. sh*t. This sucks the big one

I think you can buy a replacement boot that just uses clamps around it. Pretty cheap. I think the factory one is one piece, have to drop one side of suspension to get it. Now the axle is a diff issue. Id drive it first to see if its bent before doing anything. you can get someone to follow you and watch is its wobbleing. There pretty strong, so may be fine. Not going to hurt to drive a while with the boot ripped unless you drive gravel roads.

Thanks Rog! After looking at it I don'[t think its bent. The boot I just wraped in a boat load of duck tape real tight so that way it won't spray grease on the headers. I drove it first and it did that. I figure it its bent it will only make the bearingsgo bad. And If i need to replace it i will replace the bearing's too so it won;t matter. I doubt it's bent. Thanks or the infor. I'll get a new boot in a day or so. Now i'm off to cruise!

You can get slip-around boots that don't require you to remove the axel to replace!
Auto parts stores cary 'em, make sure there's oplenty of grease in there before you seal it all up.
Best! Ben.

I have as yet to find a split boot for the inside CV joint for a Fiero. The outer boot is no problem. Good luck, sounds like a reman axle is called for, it's not that tough to replace an axle either.

I put a couple split boots on a friends car about a year and a half ago (on front wheels of an Escort)...to this day, no leaks and they're still holding.
I had my doubts about these, but they seem to be fairly well-engineered. Heck, they're probably even better on a CV setup like the Fiero which doesn't move around as much.

My daytona had a torn boot on it's CV joint, drove around fine! When I finally did replace the axle, the old one came out in three parts (Seperated at the joints when I pulled it out). Ironically, when we put it back together, we rushed it and left half the suspension bolts out (I know I know, idiot), while backing the car out, suspension came apart on us causing the tire to bend under the car ripping the new axle out of the wheel. Axle was fine, but the force damaged the seal on the transmission, it never retained fluid again.
Anyways, CV joints aren't as weak as people tend to think! THey can take alot of punishment. I'd say just buy a remanufactered axle and save the trouble.
Just an easy yank and out with the old, and push the new one in. Very Easy. Just have more tranny fluid ready.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I had an 85 Coupe jump off the jack stands one day on to my knee. Car was fine, I couldn't stand for about 5 minutes, and was walking with a bad limp the rest of the day.

Yeah, whats with not being able to find an inner CV split boot? Helped a friend with his Mini van, had torn boot, but couldn't get the inner one that was split....outer, no problem. Anyone know why this is?

All I have to say about getting one boot and not the other is, if people want them they will have them. I worked at Schuck's (checker, kragen) for almost two years and they only carry what people ask for, and if someone needs something that they don't carry it takes from 1 day to 3 weeks to get it. I have seen split quick cv boots, all you need to do is cut the old one off, put the new one on (without removing the axle) and glue it together.
