I was talking to my cousin today about possibly doing an engine swap in the fiero. He's currently rebuilding an Lt1, but brought up something I had never heard of. He said a lot of people are pulling slanted 6 cyl's out of junk yards and rebuilding them for swaps. Anybody ever heard of this? He said that they can haul some ass, but not being much of a mechanic or engine guy myself I have never even heard of a slanted 6. Anybody ever put one in their Fiero??

The only slant 6 I know of was in Mopar cars in the 70's. I had a friend with a '70 Plymouth Duster with that engine. It was a good work horse of an engine, but hardly swap material in a newer car (let alone a Fiero!).

It is basically an inline 6 cylinder, but instead of straight up and down (like the iron duke) the cylinders are at an angle or slanted (hence the name).

Even if it were a great high powered engine (which it's not) it is way too long to fit inside the Fieros engine bay.....you figure all 6 cylinders are in a row, so it is probably close to twice as long as a 2.8.

what everyone else said. They did make lots of speed equip for them though. I had a 63 with Offenhauser intake, 4 bbl carb, dual split exhaust manifold/headers. Still slow compared to muscle cars same age. Hard to kill them too. Guy I knew couldnt open his hood, so he just drove it over a year without doing anything. finally locked up and when we checked it out there wasnt any oil in crankcase.

The 170 CI version of the Mopar slant six had a "Hyper power" 4bbl version in the 1960 dart that produced 140-150 horsepower (gross not net) at the flywheel. I've seen a fully hopped up 225 version that produced 150 HP at the rear wheels on a dyno -- a big accomplishment for a 1960's inline 6 cylinder.

However, it was "slanted" because the thing would have been 48" tall if "sat upright". The entire engine was slanted and the motormounts and Transmission mating surface were the only "right" parts of the engine.

It was bulletproof though. As durable as any engine of its day. But No substitute for Cubic Inches and in those days 450 - 500 CI was easer to get and all the cars were large enough. 225 didn't stand a chance!!
