Well, you've managed to choose the only year (84) that was not built with the idea of putting a V6 in the engine bay, so it won't be a simple bolt in swap. 85's and up are much easier--basically the engine, wire harness, ECM, fuel pump and lines would need to be swapped. The 84 is much more difficult (but not impossible!) to do. One headache is the large connector for the main wiring harness on the 84 is located right where the forward exhaust manifold will be on the V6. Also, the V6 wire harness won't match up to the existing car harness. There are several other detail differences also.
Speaking from experiance, (I had an 84 2.5 and now have an 88 GT), the difference in power and enjoyment is rather large. This car was meant to have a V6

The 85GT V6 has 190lb/ft of torque.
The Duke has no torque.

Just kidding! But yeah, the V6s are much quicker.

Near as I can figger, 'bout .317 quarts
That's just a little splash...

But yes, the 2.8-liter V6 is soooo much nicer. It has low-end torque, smoothness, nice "dignified" growl, no valve clatter, and what I'd call "character," that the 2.5-liter "Iron Duke" just can't touch.

Suggest you find someone near you who will let you drive their V6 Fiero, and you'll know what we're talking about.

It's amazing - I drove the '85 Duke all this week - it's a whole different experience - the whole CAR feels kinda cludgy. Back to the GT tomorrow! I'm done beta testing...
