In the May issue of Car Craft, results of dyno test comparing several high performance ignition boxes were posted. The Accel 300+, the MSD 6A, the Holly Annihilator, Mallory HyFire VI-A, and the Crane Fireball HI-6 were compared. The conclusion of the dyno test (on a big block) was that all five of the boxes were determined to work equally as well. The Mallory Hi-Fire was the least expensive at $115 (Summit price) and it also had an adjustable rev limiter.

I work at an auto parts place now, and we've got (and have access to) pretty much all of 'em. If the Mallory quality is up to MSDs long term reputation, then there's NO comparison on price!
The 6A is around $250 (canadian bucks here people - don't freak out!) The Mallory 'equiv' is about $115!
I'll have to look into the higher end Mallory one (with rev limiter) to get a price on it.
Good timing though, as I was just about to shell out for a 6AL!
I have a Mallory HyFire IV box that I have been running on my Civic for over 10 years on the factory coil and plugwires! The plug wires glow in the dark, but after 160,000 trouble free miles, I don't think durability is an issue.

Have more bragging rights on the number of gadgets you own.
It gives you a more complete burn by not sparking the plug once, but continuing to fire it through 15-20 degrees (MSD does anyhow) of rotation. This allows you to have a slightly richer mix and not have it get all dumped out the pipe as raw gas.
Lower emissions, more power, bla bla (insert favorite advertising hype here).

I read that article and found it very interesting. My personal opinion is that you should look also what most of the people out there are using at the track. If most serious racers use brand X it should mean something and not necessarily that they are being sponsor by them. When money is involved winning is everything out there...
The Crane HI 6 also has a built in rev limiter and it's digital. Check it out at their web page www.cranecams.com the have a direct comparation between it and the MSD6AL. Look for it under their new products.

1FST2M6, I'm sure you've seen many of these units. Do you have any opinions you'd share? Anything that really made a difference on the dyno (compared to the others)? Thanks, Scott
