Any electrical whizzes out there see any reason why this couldn't be done? I'm pretty sure the length of the leads to the module shouldn't effect its operation with the exception of possibly the pickup coil ones. Any thoughts on this?
I'm thinking of getting the module out of the heat(engine bay) and possibly mounting it either in the trunk or a fenderwell(obviously away from water). If I try this I will use a surplus aluminum heat sink from something, bolt the module to that with the stock grease, ground that directly to the motor with a dedicated wire and hook up the other wires as normal. I've seen this done on a SBC but the module was right beside the distributor so it isn't exactly the same situation. I'd think the wires for the pickup coil would need to be at least 12-24" longer depending on location.
Thoughts?

The module itself generates excessive heat (enough to kill itself) so make sure wherever you mount it that the surface can dissipate a sufficient amount of the heat, has a flat mounting surface and you use the silicone grease to xfer the heat from the module to the sink. Keep us posted.

Yeah I have thought about the heat issue but what I am wondering is does the module really generate that much heat? It would seem to me that if they are relying on the distributor base, which would get hot or at least warm all on its own, to remove the heat from the module I wouldn't think it would get that hot. I would think a heat sink of a resonable size out of the engine bay would cool the module better than the distributor, say the size of a casette tape perhaps? Thanks for the input.

I'm more worried about the leads and if increasing the length will alter the ignition performance in any way.

You must be reading my mind... short read, eh?

Currently, I'm thinking of using a twisted pair to connect the pickup coil to the remote module. Haven't tried it, yet.

You will likely run into false triggers or no trigger if you make the wires too long. Wires will have to be twisted, but I'm not sure what ratio you will need.

I say, buy an aftermarket ignition, like an MSD/ACCEL/CRANE - these use the output of the distributor ignition module as a trigger. Thus relieving the stress on the output amplifier of the ignition module.

Fiat or Renault used teh GM HEI module for their ignition system mounted on the coil in a huge heat sink. It's been so long I don't remember the applications, but it was one of the few things on the vehicles that impressed me.
