has anyone put a 2.8 V6 from a 1993 Cavalier Z24 in a Fiero? I have one such good canidate for a possible engine swap. Engine is strong, good compression, and 60 LBS oil pressure when hot, the body has too much cancer and cannot be fixed. Is this a good swap? I would be putting it into a 88' 4cyl with a 5spd Isuzu. Anyone have any tips, directions, or info on possible problem areas? Opinions are good, even if they are bad. Eveything is appreciated. Thanks all.

Hey now the 1993 Chevy Cavaliers have 3.1 in them. I had one before I got my Fiero. I don't believe that cavaliers had 2.8 until before 1990. Couldn't locate a stat sheet for the cavaliers but I am about 99% sure they didn't have 2.8's after 1989.

with that engine you have to do a wiring swap also, but the torque is good, and they do make some aftermarket parts, however in 1986 the z24 had an almost identical engine to ours, just remove its intake assembly and timing cover put the fiero intake and timing cover on and you have a perfect swap, the 1986 z24 had iron heads and iron block, and a distributor, the 1987's on had distributorless ignition.

Z-24's, Pontiac 6000, Chevy Celebrity, Sunbird's, ETC had 2.8L's in them in the 80's. But you must remember that they had the smaller valve heads for economy. They peaked at about 125hp. The only cars to get the 2.8L with big valves was the Fiero. (I think, not 100% sure on this) In the late 80's/ early 90's the 2.8L was replaced by the 3.1L. (started 3.1's in the re-designed Grand Prix/Lumina/Regal/Cutlass) The 3.1L put out 140 then in 93 or 94 they bumped it up to 160hp. In 1998 the 3.1L got bumped up to 175HP (which it still is today)

3.1L is 175HP today? Are you sure? My 3400SFI in my 99 Grand Am is rated at 170HP (175 w/Ram Air in the Grand Am GT). I find it hard to believe the 3100SFI is rated higher than the 3400. I thought it was about 160-170, tops.

I was a little amazed too. So I went to Pontiac's website and looked at a 2002 Grand Prix. (Base engine) Engine 3.1 liter 3100SFI Horsepower 175 @5200 rpm Torque 195 @4000 rpm
Now I just looked at the 3.4's
Grand Am Base 3.4L 170HP/195 Torque Ram Air 3.4L 175HP/205 Torque (HMMM, Ram Air is only 5HP??)
Montana Van and Aztec 3.4L 185HP/210 Torque
Why doesn't the above seem correct? Why make 3 different versions of the 3.4L? I wonder how accurate the Pontiac spec's are.

I have heard the "ram air" on the grand ams is somewhat of a joke. If it does anything, probably about as much as a holley "ram air" scoop on a fiero. A few HP's at most.

I was given bad info, the car is currently sitting in NC, and I am Jersy. So, if it is a 3.1, bonus! The car is a Z24 of the fine era of 93, so this may be a better thing than I thought. I talked with Ed Parks(I think that his name) from the Fiero shop in AL. He gave me a few pointers on the 3.1 block. What a guuuuuyyyyyy. Thanks for the input yall. When I get rolling, I'll post pics.
