I'm doing a 3.4 swap. I put an 88 flywheel on it so I could use it in my 87 5 speed. Put new clutch on it. IS THERE A DIFFRENCE IN AN 87 ONE TO AN 88? Should I have put an 88 clutchin there or would an 87 work. Please tell me an 87 will since my engine is in car. Not yet running. Having a slave cylinder problem and starter prob. (loud high pitch noise when started car.)
3.4 came out of an 88gt auto.

The clutch is the same.....but the flywheel is different. 88 has a neutrally balanced flywheel and the 87 has an externally balanced wheel.

sounds like your starter is loose or needs shimming. Does the noise continue after you start it....or just while starting? And what is the clutch problem?

continues after started but I turned it off imeditaly. we were thinking the starter needed shimming also. no pedal with the clutch. May need new slave cylinder. not enough travel to engage clutch or disengage it.

starter is either getting stuck in the flywheel....if it keeps running ........or the starter needs replacement

Yes, sounds like it could be a hydraulic problem with clutch.

From what i understand the 1987.5-1988 had an internally balanced flywheel, they changed mid year, it was the 1985-1987.5 that had externally.

Phil,
it kept running. we bench tested the starter and it worked. So we figured it was sticking. Putting it back in tommorow and a new slave also. hopefully this will work.
We put in an 88 flywheel $$$$. we thought we might of put wrong clutch in but I guess not. will let you know how it turns out,

Thanks for your help
you too mosh
